Microsoft went from trying to prevent you from downloading windows for free,
to forcing your computer to automatically install a windows version for free

Reasons?

I'm not a huge fan of MS

but for somethings I need to do, the app is only in windows and/or there is no alternative in Linux.

I have about 10 computers
not all of them are up and running at any given time, they all serve specific functions.
The laptops run win 10 as does my garage computer

My main computer, the one I'm using to type this, is running Ubuntu 15.10.

back to the subject at hand...

windows 10 is far from perfect. I find quite a few issues.
I found new hate for windows when there was an app I needed for my garage computer (upgraded from win7pro).
I needed  to have a MS account before I could download the FREE software.  So I went about getting one.
well the motherfuckers used that sign-in an associated it with the computer, overriding ALL the existing accounts.
I had to sign in with that account to start the computer up.  It was a major pain in the ass.  I've since located the fix to the login accounts,
but they still associate the store with the previously mentioned account.  And to make things worse... the app I downloaded didn't work for shit.
Fuck you microsoft. fucking nannystate commie bastards

They needed a way to combat piracy. Windows 10 is the "always online" version of Windows. It is also their new standard platform.

The profitability model has changed with iOS and Microsoft is adapting. With Windows 10 Microsoft needed a way to monetize(the use of, not the trade of) its very successful OS platform and piracy was the biggest weakness.

However, you can't combat piracy by just stopping piracy....piracy adapts. You have to combat piracy by making it affordable and easy to not pirate, and making it as inconvenient as possible to pirate software.

In the end, it's the same software, just a lot more secure(from a piracy perspective).

Windows 10 is inevitable though. Just look at how MS is positioning 365. There are features that are being arbitrarily turned off on older versions of office. 2007 is slowly being phased out with 365 and just recently you need to upgrade to sp2(iirc) in 2010 to even use exchange with their own hosted exchange solution.

You can go get a Windows 7 64 bit license for 20 bucks on reddit and "upgrade" to windows 10 right now. It's practically free. The goal is to populate the platform, prevent piracy on the platform, and promote often free/pirated services on the platform as cheap/easy/automatic services bundled in attractive packages.

What they are attempting is very hard, so the more data they collect the easier it will be to iron out the wrinkles.

My thing is that I can't see them walking it back. It has to keep being cheap. Real cheap. Even though adoption is strong, they need more market share(all the market share) to even make a dent in piracy, and their policies would need to change and be more harsh(they already scan your drives for pirated stuff, imho).

Another aspect of this is the death of the Xbox brand. I think it's in a death spiral(and I'm basing that off just my opinion). For years PC has been the best platform for gaming, but it has never really had a true and dedicated first party. GFWL was a failed attempt at that. However, with the steadily improving DRM which evolved from securom, the streaming of xbox one to pc directly, the always connected nature of windows 10, and the arbitrary(but actually malevolent) decision by Microsoft to hold back DX12 from any platform besides 10(thus making first party microsoft games require windows 10 or an Xbox One) microsoft is looking to unify their gaming platform behind the Microsoft(and not xbox) logo. To unify the gaming division under only a few microsoft owned and supported publishers, and offer those games only on Windows 10 or XboxOne(imho, soon only Windows 10) they stand to be in a situation where they afford to be THE ad-hoc first party for home computer gaming.

They are just trying the Apple model of OS for free make money off the apps.

With smart phones and tablets they had to evolve, if not they would eventually be removed

from the market.

They are thinking long term and trying to compete with Google OS, Linux, Apple, Droid etc.

Bill has made enough money, he is just trying to evolve like everyone else.

Just my opinion, im running win 10 on a old netbook with 2 GB of Ram and it runs great.

My gaming laptop has 8.1, so in a few months if I wlike win 10 I will upgrade it.
