I think the Hughes H1 racer is the most beautiful aircraft of all time. Had the pleasure of seeing the replica fly, and always stop to spend several minutes looking at the original at the Smithsonian |

I'm lucky to have a cloth napkin signed by Col Tibbets. I always liked his interviews regarding dropping the big one. |

Always a good pic thread. Even better when my son comes up to me while I'm scrolling through and says "Wow, cool planes!" and proceeds to climb in my lap to view the thread also |

A bunch of the multi-engine aircraft of that era are like that. A-26 & B-25, etc. Would be extra sporty in the 262 with the swept wing I would guess. In the Encore+ I can still be on the runway, loose one and and climb away at Vr accelerating through V2 View Quote View All Quotes View All Quotes Quoted:

It allows you to enjoy flying the plane a lot more. 4-5 kts. between Vr and V2 in the MD80. Not enough to matter. But, those numbers were generated with a new airplane and a test pilot 35 years ago so... TC |

Vought Corsair followed by the under sung P47 Razorback/Thunderbolts. I like radial engines.

The venerable C-47 Dakota.
No single aircraft served more roles in more theaters. The are C-47s credited with air-to-air kills. |

My favorite radial aircraft. Introduced so late in the war, it didn't have time to make an impact. My Grandfather flew them extensively post war, commanding an aerial gunnery school in the Navy. Bearcat and Corsair are on the "must fly" bucket list. Corsair is doable from what I can tell, but Bearcat will be quite a challenge I think |

View Quote When I was at VMFA112 there was a guy that flew a corsair and he would park on the flight line next to our F4's. That plane had flown with 112 during ww2. |

Question for pilots, if you flew one of these aircraft for the first time, how many hours would you need getting checked out before you felt comfortable solo?

View Quote That would depend on your flying background and experience. In my case, I flew in the Navy for 8 years before buying into a partnership in an old T-6G. Being able to comfortably fly/land the T-6/SNJ from the back cockpit is the common stepping stone for jumping into a Mustang or other WWII fighter. I'm fortunate to have a few fiends that let me fly their Mustang occasionally, as it's very expensive now. Roughly $3,000+ per hour for a Mustang all told. |

as for the axis Axis I always thought the Italian Macchi C205V Veltro(in desert camo positively sleek and sinister) and the Japanese Kawasaki Ki-61(Tony to Allies) were really good looking aircraft.

For me is a 3-way tossup between the Supermarine Spitfire, the North American P-51D Mustang and the Vought F-4U Corsair.

F4U Corsair. That gull wing profile is dead nuts sexy. After that would be a Spitfire or a P-38 Lightning.

View Quote Catalina is a unique and neat aircraft... handsome in it's own way They have(or had?) an incredible collection of WW2 aircraft in Tillamook Oregon... there was a Catalina in the collection... when seeing it up close was kinda mind blowing that such a large and complex machine was designed and built in the 30's.... really cool plane. |

Ilyushin Il-2.
AKA the flying tank. A kraut killin' machine. Stalin said it best when he admonished the head of the factory that made them: They are as essential to the Red Army as air and bread. I demand more machines. This is my final warning! |

A friend in Miami had a PBY-5A and a C-47. Spent many days helping him wok on them in the hot sun, cheap beer and flight time was my reward. Good times. |

awesome... was thinking when I was down there I wished I lived closer to that museum... would love to volunteer just to be around them/work on them.
they had a p-39 that was all in pieces they were working on(like total restoration required).... that was a cool plane with all it's unusual features. |

Good vids of the Corsair. Love the wings folding down while in a taxi. Looks like Angel of Death preparing for flight. Thing gets up and scoots with that huge prop taking massive bites of air, but I'd give my nuts to fly in any WW2 fighter.

Love seeing them race at Reno. Standing under the pylons when that goes overhead is awesome. |
