Please help me out with the installation of a dimmer switch. Older home, mid-70's. Old dimmer no longer works (lights turn on, don't dim). I opened it today and get this (the old dimmer switch is hanging off in this pic): But the dimmer switch looks like this: I know the black goes to black, green to the ground, etc. What does the white wire go to? Red or red/white? Or none of the above? Thanks in advance. Here's me when I saw this: |

Quoted: It did, but on every illustration it has no whites coming out and connecting to the new dimmer:http://i1296.photobucket.com/albums/ag1/Needles_Malloy/dimmer%204_zpswoydqvto.jpg Cap off the red/white. |

Quoted: If the white is the load to your fixtures, then connect it to red. Cap off the red/white. In the box in the wall black is hot and white is the switch leg to your light. Not the way it should have been wired but a dead end works.
Green >ground/copper Black > black Red > white Cap off red/white from dimmer Test with a meter from black to ground and then black to white to verify this. Should be no reading on the white. Usually all the neutrals are tied in the switch location from the feed in. Looks like yours are tied together at the light instead. |
