Please help me out with the installation of a dimmer switch. Older home, mid-70's. Old dimmer no longer works (lights turn on, don't dim). I opened it today and get this (the old dimmer switch is hanging off in this pic):

But the dimmer switch looks like this:

I know the black goes to black, green to the ground, etc. What does the white wire go to? Red or red/white? Or none of the above? Thanks in advance.

Here's me when I saw this:

My old dimmer switch has 2 black wires coming out of it. The new one only has 1.

What is your light? Single pole switch or 3 way? Did you get the right dimmer switch?

Not an electrician but, When I installed one there was a booklet explaining which wires to use.

Black - Line

Green - Ground

Red/White - Traveler for three way switch

Red - Load

If I remember correctly

Here's the side view of the old dimmer. New dimmer is single pole or 3-way:

Looks like the existing switch is a SP switch. The new one is a three way.

new switch is "single pole or 3-way"  Sounds like a Chase45 thread.

So black to black, green to copper and red to white? Cap red/white.

Didn't the switch come with an instruction sheet?

If not, have you looked for instructions on the manufacturers website?

Easier to come and ask here. I'm guility of this too.

Is it normal for the white wire to have burn marks on it?

It did, but on every illustration it has no whites coming out and connecting to the new dimmer:

If the white is the load to your fixtures, then connect it to red.

Cap off the red/white.

In the box in the wall black is hot and white is the switch leg to your light. Not the way it should have been wired but a dead end works.

Green >ground/copper
Black > black
Red > white
Cap off red/white from dimmer

Test with a meter from black to ground and then black to white to verify this. Should be no reading on the white. Usually all the neutrals are tied in the switch location from the feed in. Looks like yours are tied together at the light instead.

I hooked it up red/white, black/black, green/copper and it worked. Thanks for the advice!
