Well, if by space you mean low earth orbit, it could.  However, you would have to get the velocity and trajectory just right.  You would also need to figure in how much your own orbit is going to change by throwing the thing as well.  

If you are floating about somewhere between our solar system and the next star, then no it won't ever in the foreseeable future.

Outside in space? No.
