Skynet is coming... Seriously though, the guy with the hockey stick is going first in the uprising. |

This is the future of shit kicking in doors for questionable reasons. Can't embed right now, it's worth the click I love all Neil Blomkamp's work, even this early short. |

This stuff always amazes me; you KNOW the guys working on it have seen Terminator, I Robot, Alien, the Matrix movies, and Robocop before, yet they still go about building these things. WAY TO GO, GENIUSSES!
On a side note, I can see these being useful for work in high hazard areas, such as nuclear clean up or waste handling, munition and bomb disposal, etc. |

I don't think my thoughts on this are CoC compliant. Scary stuff right there. Nothing that a .308 round center of mass can't take care of. LC I wasn't referring to the droids. |

I don't think my thoughts on this are CoC compliant. Scary stuff right there. Part of that gut reaction is justified, part of it is not. This particular robot is just a very sophisticated machine. There is no intelligence or ego within it, but naturally any human being is going to impute such anthropomorphic characteristics upon it. There's a visceral reaction to what seems to be cruelty inflicted upon it. But in this particular case there's nothing to be cruel to. It's a machine. I know I always have that reaction in Boston Dynamics videos. I have to remind myself that they're just testing software, and that there's no mind in the robot to inflict cruelty upon. However, this video is certainly evidence of some of the most advanced machine intelligence available, and eventually we're going to have to think about unintended consequences of such intelligence being given the means to interact with the physical world. Eventually more and more intelligent machines are going to come up with some really innovative strategies to complete their tasks without ne'er-do-wells with hockey sticks buggering things up. We might not like their solutions. If you're willing to read the work of a brilliant, if somewhat autistic, expert on the subject of shaping the growth of machine intelligences I'd recommend Superintelligence by Nick Bostrom. It's a dense read. The man appears to be pretty high on the autism spectrum and doesn't seem to know how tone down his writing for someone outside his field. The gist of it is it's possible for superintelligent AI to be developed in a way that benefits humanity, but given the seemingly insurmountable flaws in their human creators, odds are we'll bugger it up and get converted into paperclips. |
