In the old days it was taboo to have a flip up front sight in a SHTF rifle, is it now OK to have flip up sights?

TLDR:
Flip up front sight or standard front sight base?

If I'm ever in a situation that's so critical that FSB vs flip up makes a difference then something has gone terribly wrong.

I personally don't see any issue with backup sighs. My rifles have them. I don't expect to be in the middle of a fire fight and need them. But shit happens. Maybe you drop the rifle just right and it messes something up. Or maybe the battery does die and you don't have another.

There are zero cons to having flip up sights.
They do not take up much room, don't weigh much of anything, and I'd rather have them and not need them than need them and not have them.

Mine has flip ups. I'm a non tier one teener so I'm probably in the wrong.

I prefer a fixed front sight.

Tier -1 here.

I put fixed sights on mine, with cut carry handle A2 rear.

I put my rifles back to A2 config with tritium iron sights.  Took all the other horseshit off too.  Much happier with a 7 pound rifle, and range time is more fun.

To me it's just one more moving part to malfunction.  Granted a fixed front can too, but to me it seems less likely.  Also, I think of long term scenarios when parts and stuff may not be available.  It just seems like a fixed front sight would be more rugged (no spring, no hinge, no screw to loosen).  Again that's just my opinion and it's worth what you paid for it.

I only have two AR's.  One of them has a fixed sight (6920) and the other one came with flip ups and will shortly be sporting an ACOG.

If my second one didn't come with flip up sights I would probably just not even bother with back up irons, but having them doesn't hurt.

I bought a YHM flip up sight gas block combo. It seems pretty beat proof

As long as they and the rail are robust, there's nothing wrong with flip-ups for SHTF. I ran the KAC 99051's and Matech's on my block 2's. Its a bomb proof setup. I've switched back to the standard issue configuration with M4 RAS and FSB's along with Matech's now tho.

A FSB will always be more robust in my opinion. But the DD RIS II/ KAC 99051 and KAC or Matech rear was PLENTY bomb proof for SHTF. Hell, it's the exact setup SOCOM/SOF uses. Wouldn't have been adopted if it wasn't bomb proof.

How do you attach the sharp thingy to the rifle without an FSB?
2/22/2016 8:08:16 PM EDT

If they come with them I keep them on, if they dont or if I build my own I dont buy them.

You don't. Part of the reason I went back to the std issue config. I love shoving my bayonets in moist warm pockets of.......stuff.

Fixed front sight would be better if you run out of ammo.  Those fuckers hurt when they hit you in the head.

Is there even a single documented case of BUIS being used in combat or some other defensive (or offensive, I guess) role? Or even anecdotal evidence? Because I sure haven't.

I trust my Aimpoint far more than I do BUIS.

Just get an aimpoint. It is indestructible and the battery will outlive you.

There is a con: price.

Even a cheap pair is going to cost $80-100, which could buy a handful of mags or ammo that IMHO would be more useful than irons that are not needed and will never get used.

For those of us on a budget, $100 is a lot to spend on something like BUIS when it could be allocated towards something more useful.

My SHTF AR is wearing flip ups as the sole sighting device. So yeah, I guess I'm in it to win it with fips ups if SHTF here pretty soon....

I've seen this before and I've never understood it, unless there are plans to eventually put an optic on of course.

And that's all I'm going to say about that.

Ive been in "a SHTF situation" several times.

None of those times did I even have Iron sights. Or care that I didn't have them.

Deal with it.

I guess that depends on what you call a SHTF situation...
2/22/2016 10:09:36 PM EDT
[#46]
If you're situation is dependent on a battery  .  .  . then . . .

. . . you're depending on not being in a true SHTF situation.

If you run irons only, flip ups are not your best bet.

If you run an Aimpoint, Acog, or something reliable... Solid back ups are fine. You'll likely never need them.. And I hate to say it, but Troy, (I know I know) makes very solid backups..

I prefer a standard FSB for something that's going to get beat around (woods gun, truck gun, etc)

For a general HTF situation I have no problem with flip up sights.

SHTF and TEOTWAWKI are not even close to the same thing.

Invest in a good optic and you don't need irons.
