I see so many $60k trucks around here...2500 HD Denali, newest F-150 limited, etc... how the hell are people affoding these as dailly drivers? I make just under six figures, have zero debt, single, no kids and I can't justify $1000 a month for a car payment.

I asked this same question at a dealership recently as I was buying a used truck with 21K miles on it.

The answer was "they do without everything else". No going out to eat. No toys. No satellite TV. No dental work. "Rub some dirt in it" for anything requiring less than 3 stitches, etc.

I can't believe the people buying vehicles with a note bigger than their mortgage. Right next to the dealership is a trailer park. I shit you not, there is a cadillac escalade in the driveway of one of the trailers. Been there for years. Property values are low enough out here they could have moved out of the trailer park and bought a house with what they will pay for that thing.

Priorities.

Deep In dept or really good job..

My truck is an 05 with 185k on it

If you're not making over six figures by your 30th birthday then you're not really trying. Absolutely no reason to not be making that kind of money these days. Especially when we have a wealth of knowledge available to us now.

I've asked myself the same question.  My best answer is it appears to me leasing is back big time & that's fueling sales.  FWIW, I make six figures & drive a '98 K1500.  I could afford one of them new trucks, but can't justify it when mine does everything I need it to do.

While back large SUV and pickups would get decent tax write offs if used for business. I know they tried to close that off for most SUV's but for pick ups is that still the case today?

My bosses niece commented this last week that i should buy a new pickup as i was shopping for a new service pickup. My wifes pickup has 225k on it.

I told her i couldnt afford it (she does payroll). She said i could i just didnt want to. She said her payment on each of their 3 vehicles is more than her 600 dollar house payment.

I have a 225 dollar mortgage.

This year im going to splurge and buy my wife a nice pickup. We live pretty frugile. Its time. I want a nice 3/4 ton 4 door long bed. Nothing too decked out, just a few options, aftermarket wheels. A nice pronghorn flat bed if i can talk her into it. That might be a few years down the road when we upgrade and i take over that one though.

Because one way or another F&I will find a way to sell that truck.
Ten year loan, two or three co signers, roll over negative equity, loan sharks.......whatever it takes to hold out until the loan is funded.
Prices are outrageous because lenders will loan that amount.  If they didn't, prices wouldn't be as high as they are.  That goes for any financed item.

I bought mine a few years old used, and even then would not have bought it if not for being able to claim depreciation on my taxes as a farm vehicle.

I do that. Drive 1000 to 1500 miles a week. I still refuse to pay for power windows or carpet. My boss/partner gave me a 60k budget last time and i ended up ordering the cheapest pickup i could, except i went big and paid for cloth seats. I am tired of vinyl.

You can justify it all you want but most of the options dont turn one goddamn red cent of profit and stretch the return on capital out for much longer.

That being said, pickups are insane these days. I just bought a basic single cab work pickup last week for 30 grand. No options other than 4x4. Im 28, when i started i could buy a 3/4 with a new utility bed for 19,999.

My truck is an F250 FX4 king ranch.  Sticker on it was somewhere around 65k.

I financed it for 48 months and put 8 grand down.

Now, here's the kicker.  I lease it back to my company and bill 1.45 per mile it drives.  It's also a write off on my taxes.  As is the 2010 corvette and the 2015 mustang.

So there you go.  That's how I afford it.

2. It's a "work truck".

I bought my escalade new back when I was 26, took me roughy 3.5-4 years to pay it off (down payment was over 30k). Just worked out I guess. But within your means, everyone's budget will be different, some people tend to over extend themselves though

my job tomorrow is to go get a state inspection done on a 1988 C70

i'll check all the lights just to make sure they work but otherwise there's not a motherfucking thing on that truck that doesn't work

granted, it has a floor dimmer, standard split transmission, roll up windows, no AC, and shit like actual glass headlights but it hasn't skipped a beat for damned near as long as i've been alive

Is it that time of the month (bitch about how much others spend on a truck) again?

Meh, I'm debt free and craving a different truck right now.  Had mine 10 years and starting to get kinda bored with it.

I'm lusting after one of these.  A money saving used 2014 FX4.

And if anyone doesn't approve of what I spend MY money on, they can bite the head.

My truck is 26 years old and still drives great, AC blows cold, and it keeps me warm in winter.
Have no idea how many miles it has since the odometer only goes up to 99,999 before rolling over. It showed 30K when we bought it and now displays 65k. We have a receipt where the engine was replaced at about 89k and someone wrote in wax pencil on the underside of the hood that it was replaced at 153k as well.

Not sure who to believe but the truck does what I ask it to.

Umm, if you can't live relatively well as a single guy taking home ~$5K a month after taxes with ONE BILL that is around 1100 bucks, you've got bigger problems than a truck is going to solve, anyway.

Fuck, I'm married with 2 kids and I live WELL on less than that after all of my other financial obligations.

If a grand a week isn't enough to clothe, feed and shelter you, I'd suggest you're either too opulent in your choices or WAY too fucking tight with your wad.
