I just want to remind everyone to practice firearm safety to the max. This is what a 22-250 can do to your foot at close range. He was unloading an ADL type action by running rounds through the chamber when it went off. This is one of our foremen. Unfortunately he lost his foot. |
It takes a special kind of flexible to point a bolt action at your own foot while unloading it.
It's too bad about his foot. Did you ask him what it felt like when it happened? |
at least it was the left foot so he can still drive cars with an auto trans.

Wow
I know they can do a lot of damage to a groundhogs head out to 250 yards + , with my hand loads using nosler 55 ballistic tips |
Things moving north of 3000 fps tend to make a mess. Hot 22-250 is in the high 3000's.
Yikes, he burgered his foot pretty good. Lots of gas got in that wound. I bet it didn't bleed all that much |
I'm surprised it didn't do more damage. a 22-250 is a wicked cartridge.
dude still lost his foot due to amputation. |
I've seen first hand what a 30-30 lever action will do to a lower leg if you try and hoist it into a tree stand when it's loaded. Entered the kids foot, traveled up and exited inside of leg near the knee. Devastating.
That said, with the advancement in prosthetics, the person in the OP will be able to perform any thing without hindrance. |
I would have expected a lot more damage. Close range, high velocity rifle wounds are very messy.

22-250 is a very legit caliber, and kills many large animals.
Can I ask a more serious question though... does anyone know why his big toe nail looks like that (the crease/ridge)? Mine are starting to do the same thing. His is far more pronuced, but I would still like to know what it means. Immeniment death I'm sure. |

Ive found the membership here to be big proponents of .22cal cartridges. Many members post very successful 5.56 deer hunts. 22-250 is a bad mother. 3600fps, close range, you can bet the gas did much of the damage, blow torch effect. |
Yes, a .22/250 at point blank will destroy tissue like that and you can unload an ADL safely without closing the action on a round.
I suspect muzzle blast made a serious contribution to the damage.
When I saw the (graphic), I thought "diagram" and regrettably clicked on the thread. Oh English language, you so funny. |
I worked a call as a vol emt where a guy did the exact same thing with a 30-06, rested the bbl on his boot while unloading. Near identical results.

having used a 22-250 extensively, I am suprised that it did not completely remove his foot.
It moves so fuckin fast it explodes whatever it hits. |
That's unfortunate, but was preventable.
22-250 with the right (wrong) round will render a lot of useless meat on a deer shoulder. As far as bruising goes, I think it does more damage than a .308. |

They have really nice replacement feet nowadays. I doubt he is slowed down a bit. View Quote View All Quotes View All Quotes Quoted:

Hell, just the propellant gas and unburnt powder from a high power rifle cartridge will do a ton of damage at contact distance.
Problem is it probably didn't penetrate all the way thru the foot, and was probably fully expanded and in separate pieces by the time it got thru his boot and sock.
a 22-250 is the only cartridge we have ever fired at the farm that took paint off the hood of a truck. it is a total screamer. I was a teenager and it opened my eyes to what small high velocity calibers can do to coyotes, dogs and deer.

View Quote I'd wager that he was wearing boots, and his footwear helped to keep all the foot-chunks from flying outward at high speed. I've seen people out this way use 22-250 as a whitetail round more than you might think. |

It actually hit him in the chest. The bullet just followed the bone and exited his foot.

I have a friend that caught a .222 at point blank in the leg. He limps 25 years later and still has issues pertaining to it. I didn't see it but he described it as being quite gnarly. So yea, a 22-250 would be bad.

Sorry, Frosty. |

Two things. Are those powder burns do you think or is it just meat dying in the wound? What happened to his big toe as it looks like it caught some damage too?
