I'm helping a young acquaintance get started in shooting. He's very enthusiastic, very conservative fellow. I like him.

I am mid fifties, grew up  with guns, was properly instructed in Marine Corps Rifle when I was 11, by my WWll Marine Combat Vet & retired Drill Instructor Scout Master.

I also Went to Uncle Sams Rifle school at Ft Benning when I came of age.

I've always shot, and always owned guns. I've hunted with scoped rifles for 40+ years.

So I take things for granted as common knowledge, when perhaps, I shouldn't.

So today, my friend had a new scope for his AR, a birthday gift from his wife, a Chinese variety that goes to ten power on a 28 mm Objective and has a built in LASER!

He wanted help mounting it and sighting it in.

I reserved comment, he will come to it on his own in due time, I feel my job is to expose him to good stuff, and gently help him on his way, not tear down his dreams. ( TEN POWER!)

So we started at 25 yards with a sight in grid, and I explained the process  of bringing the scope and rifle together in harmony, and proper technique, to the best of my ability.

He did well, shooting a one hole, five shot group once we got it on. Time to go to 100.

It was a little frustrating at 100, an inch high at 25 ended up going over the backer board at 100, but we got there, took 25 rounds or so of up down and back and forth, I finally figured out that it was taking a few shots for the adjustments to " settle" after you made them. He did very good, shooting multiple 2 inch groups. I was able to get down to just over an inch, outstanding for a standard S&W Carbine with a Chinese scope and Wally World Federal FMJ's.

So it was a good day.

As we are packing up, he says; " Can I borrow your screw driver?" Ok.

And he takes off the scope.

"Why did you do that?" I ask...

" Well, it won't fit in the case with my AK with the scope on it."

So, how good are T-Marks and picitinny rails? How reliable are the remounts when you do that? I have never taken an optic off once I mounted it.

As long as he repeats his procedure identically each time mounting the scope (ie pushing forward against the lugs while tightening) in the same tightening sequence, I bet it stays within 2 moa if not better.

Did you explain to him why that was a bad idea?

I gently explained that he would probably experience a change of POA and it defeated the fine tuning we had just spent the last hour accomplishing.
