The dishwasher in my house has some spots where the bare metal of the rack has been showing.  They must have been showing for awhile because its rusting.  This has basically ruined the bad-ass stainless steel silverware I had.
The question is, how can I "patch" the wear spots?  and, am I just plain screwed since its already rusted?

New dishwashers can be really cheap--I think I saw some at Best Buy for not much more than $200.  Plus newer ones are easier on your water bill.

Why don't you contact the mfg. and see if you can get new racks?

You might try plasti-dip in a spray can.  I don't know how it'd handle the heat.

2-part epoxy should work. Just clean the rust away with a wire brush on a Dremel tool before applying it.

Well, its a rental, and I'd really rather not buy a dishwasher for someone else's house.
I had heard that plasti-dip would work, I guess I'll have to try that one out.

The problem with trying to clean out the rust is that the rust eats its way back up under the rubber coating, so without stripping off more rubber, you'll never get to the rust.

How about that rubber coating stuff they sell for tools. I think Home Depot sells it up here.
Might be worth looking into.
