News videos have recently been showing groups of Iraqi males out in public chanting and doing a rhythmic arm-wave chest-slapp movement while chanting. What is the significance of this? Is it a form of prayer, pennance or just tribal dancing?

It's part of a Shiite ritual in which the men beat themselves. It is connected to a holiday that SH had banned the Shiites from observing. Now, courtesy of the USA, they can perform their religious rituals in relative freedom. The infidels strike again!
