My Gramma on my dads side used to make it when I was young. She died when I was pretty young, then granddaddy went a few years later. Most of their stuff went to who knows where. I was telling my kids about gramma's root beer, and they want me to make some. Recipe nowhere to be found after almost 40 years. I did some googling and found a few, but thought I'd ask here. Does anyone have an old fashioned rootbeer family recipe they'd like to share? One made with sassafras, not the newer substitutes. Many thanks in advance. |

I tried a few recipies, but haven't found one that turned out yet. The thing that ruined all of them was the vanilla addition. Without that, I think they would have turned out great.
I used the actual root, sasparilla, sasssafras, burdock, anise star, etc.. I need to make another batch and leave out the vanilla. Here's a promising recipe, just leave out the vanilla bean. http://www.chowhound.com/recipes/chow-root-beer-10681
