I'm trying to change the default start menu items on all Windows 7 enterprise machines across the domain to say by default "restart" instead of shutdown

currently there is a GPO in place at the root that is sort of doing that function

long story short, i want it to always say "restart"

problem:

if you have updates to run on your pc it says shutdown, if computer is up to date it says "restart"

I always want it to say restart regardless of updates

I don't think 99.9% of GD will have any clue what you're talking about.

I hate GPO with a passion... but I'm a Linux sysadmin. I have a windows 7 laptop for work (that I run a Linux VM on for all my work) which is bogged down by silly shit.

Anyway, I'm sure there's SOME way to do it with a GPO... it's just been 6 years or so since I've done any Windows admin work.

Are you applying the GPO to User or Computer objects? EDIT Scroll down to option 2 Here

I believe that it is computer objects, i'm not he sys admin i'm only tasked with trying to find out "why" the sys admins didn't do it right

lots of politics, so i'm more of an investigator, i do have access to the GP though

Look at the Example picture. I believe it's the same thing

It looks like that option in the link is the one you'd want, it disables the "install and shut down" option entirely. Obviously you'd do that i the Group Policy Management window rather than on the local computer as shown in the link.

EDIT: There's actually another policy called "Do not adjust default option to 'Install Updates and Shut Down' in Shut Down Windows dialog box" and it specifically states it'll keep the user's last shutdown choice even if there are updates available. I don't know how this policy and the one above work together or against each other, but you might need to look at both.
