My chrono reacts to other shooters' muzzle blasts recording random speeds or errors; is this normal?

Yes, and probably the blast of your gun, too.  The benches where you are shooting must be terrible close together.

Move the instrument farther from the bench and move to a different bench if necessary.

We were open range shooting.

A pistol would have to be pretty close to set it off, but an AR several feet away will do it too.

Is it a thing with the Caldwell or common among chronos?

It's common with chronographs.  Put the chronograph at least 10 feet from the muzzle of the firearm to eliminate the muzzle blast.  12 to 15 feet is a pretty good idea.

Thank you.

I did have it a bit close last time out.
