Why do people freak out about a snow flurry and a dusting of accumulation? I don't recall such hysteria when I was growing up. Perhaps my parents would lay in some extra food.
My book of Faces is aflutter with snow hysteria. |

The media. Look how your local news and the national news carry on and on about stupid shit. Local news has gotten worse over the last few years. Storm track weather, use a 'threat tracker' daily for teh bad weathers. It's cold in January and I might need a coat? Wow! It's raining and I need an umbrella! You don't say. |
In North Alabama it's a pain to deal with. Mostly because it melts during the day and freezes. If there's snow around here there's usually a lot of ice too which causes lots of issues with infrastructure. Also, all the rednecks and soccer moms don't understand awd/4wd doesn't do anything when you don't have a coefficient of friction to begin with so they all promptly slide into ditches and each other.

The media. Look how your local news and the national news carry on and on about stupid shit. They don't report real news anymore. It's how they get viewership up....by creating hysteria to get people to watch. 100% correct, in my opinion. My mom is getting old and, frankly, analytical capability was never her strong point to begin with, but she sent me an email a year or two ago about how deadly it was to go out in the sun without sunscreen. Now, this was about the time when she was watching the Weather Channel all the time. I tried to explain to her that people like me who work indoors and don't get much UV action to begin with aren't in a very high risk group for melanoma. No dice. The leftoids at TWC had her convinced that if you step outside without being covered in goop you'd be instantly incinerated. You should have seen the hysterical emails I got every spring back when I lived in Oklahoma City. They were epic. She still can't understand how anyone in the state left alive. She pretty much believes that tens of thousands of people are killed by tornadoes every year in Oklahoma.

Take note of those around you this holiday season. You'll quickly find out who doesn't own a proper coat and boots. What about those people that have next to no food in there cupboards, do you think that they went and bought rock salt last spring while it was on clearance? Also, when walking through a parking lot, take note of the kind of tires and the tread left on the tires as you walk by cars.
There are a lot of people who would be in pretty bad shape waiting on AAA let alone going a whole weekend without power. You expect these people to be prepared for anything? These are the same people that know that they are likely to get old and not be able to work someday but spend all their money on the newest 40k 4x4 or AWD and stick with the stock caster wheels and summer fashions. I chalk a lot of these problems up to instant gratification, being a reactionary society. and plain old ignorance. Frankly, I'm more surprised at the people who are surprised about these things. |

We get it here too.
The local News stations, are well inland, and always go into full Roger Rabbit hysteria, anytime a good system is moving through in the next 24 hours. Half the time, the storms disrupt our lake effect dumps, so it's a break for us.
What is really annoying, are the northeast Nancys, on the national media, hyping a named storm, that manages to drop 6-8". I guess the hype sells advertising or something. Never noticed the hype until around the late 90's. |
