This thread reminded me of something that was said on the radio the other day.
I was driving home from work the other day and was flipping through the stations and came across a liberal spewing some bullshit on NPR. I don't remember all the details because I have a tendency to stop paying attention to anything being said on NPR. But once in a while some jackass will say something that gets my attention and causes me to scream at the radio. Anyway, they were kind of all over the place about gun control and climate change a bunch of other stupid shit and this retarded guest said something to the effect of, 'It's proven that history does not repeat itself and those that claim it does are delusional.' or something along those lines. Well, it got my attention and caused me to scream hurtful things on his behalf to the radio. So, I've been thinking of instances where this guy is a fucking retard and is completely wrong. I'm not exactly the smartest person on the planet and I've only been able to come up with a few so I turn to the geniuses of ARFCOM to help list some examples where history has and does repeat itself. The few I've come up with are: - Napaleon's march into Russia. - Hitler's March into Russia. - Britain's invasion of Afghanistan. - Russia's invasion of Afghanistan. - United States invasion of Afghanistan. - United States invasion of Iraq 1991. - Untied States invasion of Iraq 2003. - United States quasi redoployment into Iraq/Syria 2014? - World War I. - World War II. - Fall of Communism & the Arab Spring. - Great Depression. - Great Recession/Housing Crash. Now, granted they all don't actually repeat themselves in the same manner. I may be wrong. Can anyone else think of any other examples? |

History may not repeat itself, but it does rhyme. That's what I was thinking. It just annoyed the shit out of me when I heard that on the radio. It took me five minutes and a google search to come up with the examples I did. I know there is more but like I said, I'm not the smartest person and I'm not sure what other examples there are. |

That's why I cant listen to talk radio, even conservative talk shows. I just get pissed. |

Normally I just drive about with the radio off but sometimes I want some noise and since I can never find any decent music I end up with NPR because that's all it ever is - is noise. |

Nothing repeats itself in the literal sense as you are interpreting it as. You are not going to get another guy named Hitler running another Third Reich. I know it doesn't repeat literally, I stated that at the end of the OP. Forgot about the who's and the why's, it is about then when's and how's. "Napaleon's march into Russia. " " Hitler's March into Russia. " This example right here. Two different world powers over 100 years apart tried to conquer Russia .Both took heavy losses and did not take Russia. Invading Russia is a bad idea, history repeated itself. |

If you are trying to disprove the NPR commentator's statement, then you have to know and accurately represent his statement. Did he claim that there were no similar events through history? |

I musta slept through that one. |

Behavior types and patterns are kinda predictable. We seem to have a pretty good idea what communism is and where the end game for that takes us. 1400 years of Islam is pretty much repeatable despite the 'golden age' fiction. |

That is not a careful or detailed description of the NPR commentator's statement or point. The OP made it very clear that he doesn't pay much attention to the NPR discussions, and then paraphrases part of a statement that prompted an emotional response. Those details hardly suggest his representation of the NPR discussion is objective and perfectly accurate. So, it begs the question whether he is actually refuting what the NPR commentator said or what he thinks they said/meant. Anyone have a transcript of this story? |

I couldn't remember what he said verbatim but I do remember he did not state that histories "rhyme". He said that they do not repeat and people that think they do are wrong. I wish I could remember the guys name so I could look it up and get exactly what he said. He did not cite any examples like we've been doing. He just dismissed the entire saying, "Those who do not remember the past are doomed to repeat it." like it was a joke. I do remember it was John Hockenberry's show and the commentator was not John because he was on vacation. The interview was earlier this week. Yes, I wasn't particularly paying close attention to it because I hate NPR and hate most of the commentators and guests. But when he dismissed the entire history thing I was was like, "Dafuq did he just say?" |
