A band I practically forgot about, honestly. They were really damn good and pioneered that sound, but unfortunately they spawned an entire genre of imitators and ignited the flame that ultimately became some of the worst late 90s/early 2000s nu-metal.

So who came first, Deftones or Chevelle? Because I can mistake one for the other real easy.

Wannabe Tool band in my opinion.  Never could get into them at all.  Most Tool fans I know feel the same way, but a few I know got into them.

Really? I dont feel that way at all and I am a huge Tool fan.

Deftones is clearly nu metal but more legit than say... linkin park or korn and etc.

I dunno, I just think the lead singer tries to be Maynard too much, just never could get into them at all.  My best friend in HS loved them though, and was always trying to get me and a couple of our other friends to listen, but we couldn't dig it.

ETA, but I do agree they are more legit than both Linkin Park and Korn.

Love me some Deftones.  Great live show too.

Fun Fact: The Deftones were scheduled to play the Paris Theater the following day after the Islamic Terrorists shot it up.

Deftones was my first concert with Glassjaw back in 2000 at the Norva.

Now that you mention it, the one dude's tortured 'YEEEAAAAHHHH' sounds totally different than the other dude's tortured 'YEEEAAAAHHHH'.

I'll call the guitar tone a wash.

White Pony was the first CD I bought and played when I got my license. Probably my all time favorite band. I even have 2 Deftones ornaments my Christmas tree!

Lol.

I can see the similarity. I'm a huge fan of both so the differences stand out and make the band.

Nah not even close. Just because Maynard did a song with them does not make them a Tool wannabe band.

I see some common elements between Deftones and Tool, but in the same way there are common elements between Rush and Primus. I've never call one an imitation of the other.

I like Deftones a lot, but I've gotten burned out on pretty much all their stuff because it was my go-to weight lifting music for a long time.

They're one of my absolute favorite bands. They have such a good groove, a defined yet uncategorizable sound.

Sex metal. That's what I call Deftones. Metal you can bang to.

The music is entirely uplifting to me.

The fuck you talking about?

I think you're confusing Pete Loeffeler (Chevelle)'s voice emulation of MJK from Tool/ Pucifer/ A Perfect Circle.

And Deftones came first.

Most people that understand music stopped calling Deftones a NuMetal band almost as quickly as they started.

"Deftones are a NuMetal Band"

Listen:

Cherry Waves

A song about realizing you would do anything for someone, but questioning if they'll do the same

Rosemary

^ goosebumps. Song about two people connected and traveling time together.

Agreed.

I've had unfortunate timing of being in the town that the Deftones had just recently or were just about to play in. But never the time that they were actually there.

Yeah, Chino's nearly undecipherable lyrics and soothing voice inbetween screams dropped many a pair of panties for me, so my voice didn't have to. For some reason, Deftones gets 'em wet.

Why? You can pretty much play the White Pony album to a girl and be guaranteed to get laid.
