In your opinion, who was the all around worst US President? There's so many ways a President can be a failure - but to be the truly WORST President, I'd say he'd have to be not only a failure - but also must have done outright damage to the nation. Some (even on this board) might say GW Bush is the worst because of all the supposed rights being violated by the Patriot Act, CFR, War On Terror, etc. I don't agree. Here's my top four and one spot for ya'll to fill in your choice if you don't agree: 1) Clinton 2) Lyndon Johnson 3) FDR 4) Woodrow Wilson 5) ( ? ) If I could add a fifth it would be Carter. |
FDR and Lyndon Johnson probably hurt the nation a lot more, with their socialistic BS, but the fellow who has to be acknowledged as the 'very worst', must be Bill Clinton! It's a tribute to the strength of our Republic that our nation could survive 8 years of that POS! POS? He's even worse! I feel I owe an apology to excrement everywhere! Quoted: Washington, should have invaded Canada while it was (politicaly correct). [8D] Good one! That would've been a GREAT move, and I think it was attempted, but didn't work. Forgive my lack of history memory at the moment. I can't recall the details. edited: I voted Clinton as the worst. I can't imagine any other President, no matter how bad they were, thinking it's 'OK' to get sucked off in the Oval Office (by any one other than their own wife...had to clarify that.) |
Quoted: Carter was history's greatest monster. Really?!? What is your basis? I know he was a disaster of a President but I think he was a genuniely decent person. He just seemed to have the Anti Midas Touch, no matter how good his intentions whatever he touched turned to shit. |
That would be Abraham Lincoln First President to declare Martial Law, and suspend Habeus Corpus First President to throw people in jail without the benefit of a trial because they opposed his policy of going to war. First US President to send thousands of troops to invade and destroy people living in other US States. First President to try civilians in Military Court. First President (and his Vice President: Johnson) to appoint state legislatures to ram through constitutional Amendments (13th and 14th Amendments) Lincoln was anything but one of our greatest presidents. Instead he was a Tyrant. John Wilkes Booth was a Hero, and he was right when he said "Death to Tyrants" (in Latin) after he had shot Lincoln in Ford's Theatre. |
I'm too young to remember the others, so I'll go with Clinton. Maybe I should study history? I think so! Working on WWII right now, but should probably pay more attention to what was happening here. I think that the country is still suffering in many ways from Clinton's antics. UN poopie (ie. world heritage sites) AW ban Enron Lewenski |

Quoted: ... I see a lot of folks haven't studied history The_Macallan. Example, James Buchanan was a totally inept leader, he made Civil War inevitable. Many Americans died on our dirt because he couldn't diplomatically diffuse the division that led to the war. |

He just seemed to have the Anti Midas Touch, no matter how good his intentions whatever he touched turned to shit. I figured you for a Simpsons fan, Steyr. There's an episode when a new statue of Springfield's founder is being unveiled. Mayor Quimby declares that due to the city's budget crisis, Springfield could only afford a statue of Jimmy Carter. When the statue of a smiling JC is unveiled to the crowd's horror, Homer yells out "Jimmy Carter?!?! He's history's greatest monster!!" and the crowd riots. Now whenever I hear Carter's named mentioned, I always cry "Jimmy Carter?!?! He's history's greatest monster!" I can't help it. |

Quoted: Washington, should have invaded Canada while it was (politicaly correct). [8D] We DID invade Canada (or the British Colony of Canada. It wasn't a country back then, IIRC), back in 1812... We got our butts handed to us (trying to cross a certain river), too... |
Clinton is the most recent, and the worst of those up on the list... LBJ is the runner up, due to his (and his administration) being an absolute wus WRT the Vietnam war... You CANNOT win a war with ALL APPENDAGES TIED BEHIND YOUR BACK!!! Not to mention, he's the one who made FDR's social programs the monsters they are today... Wilson may have given us the income tax, but he also moved us from 'head-in-sand' isolationisim to active involvement, setting the USA on the road to superpower status... I move to remove this one... FDR gave us the nanny state, and tried to pack the supreme court when they struck down his actions... Plus he thought that if we were nice to the Soviets, they'd leave us alone (Churchill & Patton knew better, hence the Iron Curtain speech)... And he created the UN... He gets 2nd runner up... Carter would be my 'addition' if I could nominate someone who's not there... |
I have to go with Wilson. Implementation of the income tax had a predictable outcome, and it was the necessary "first step" to bring us to where we are today. "Wilsonianism" is still a pejorative in political discussions. Bastard. And while I agree that the way Lincoln managed to preserve the union was wrong, preserving the union was a right and necessary thing. The end result of the Civil War by far beat the likely alternatives. I cannot forgive him for his tactics, but I cannot fault his goal. The world would be a far different place today had the Civil War not been fought, and I don't think it would be a pleasant one. |
Quoted: Buchanan. His ineptitude led to the War of Northern Agression. Clinton is probably the worst since then. WRT: CIVIL WAR... And if we're gonna call it the 'War of ____ Agression', remember: the CSA attacked FIRST... Also, said war was neccicary for the healthy growth of the USA. It put to rest once and for all the notion that a state or states could 'up-and-leave' if they didn't like what the rest of the country was doing... That war established that we are ONE NATION, INDIVISIBLE, not a bunch of little squabbling states loosely united but basically independant... The Union victory was the foundation for all that is American power today (and yes, all the bad that has come of a strong central govt. But the good (US power) outweighs the bad (occasional fed govt abuses))... I'd rather live in the current system than the fracticious, disorganized, powerless (and probably still isolationist) mess that would have resulted from a CSA victory... |
FDR was the worst. Socialist to the core. Power hungry. Just no good. During the rationing of WWII, a person or family could own only X number of cattle. My dad told me about my grandfather having to take the milk cow who had fed "his babies" (my dad and his sisters) to be slaughtered so that rural people could not have more meat or beef than people in urban areas because of rationing. The cattle were just slaughtered and pushed into giant holes which were mass graves. TS |

I have to go with FDR. LBJ didn't get us into the VN war, but he mismicromanaged it. He built his Great Society programs on the foundation laid by FDR. Now we have 3rd & 4th generation welfare families. Think of that- entire families where nobody has been productive in generations! He was a self-serving bully. Carter is a "nice man", but didn't have the spine/gonads combination for the job. He gave away the Panama Canal, and this strategic waterway is now being operated by the Chinese. He allowed the revolutionaries in Iran to hold American hostages, and I think it's fair to say the rest of the country was held hostage too, in a figurative sense (until we got a new sheriff in town!). I think Klinton got so many votes because his imbecilic antics are so fresh in our memories. There isn't room here to go into detail on his gross imcompetence. FDR had no respect for the Constitution. So many of his acts were getting struck down by the Supreme Court on Constitutional grounds that he tried to pack the court (increase the number of justices so he could appoint a majority that would support him). Fortunately, that too got thrown out. After doing some research and study, I'm convinced he knew about the Japanese fleet steaming for Pearl Harbor (and I tend to be skeptical about conspiracy theories until they begin to quack like a duck). Lincoln didn't make the list, but I'll give him a mention. The Lincoln I learned about from independent research is far different than the Lincoln I learned about in 3rd grade in a government school. People were arrested without charges and imprisoned for years for disagreeing with him. He sent the army to shut down newspapers whose editorial slant was against the war. He assumed dictatorial powers that are just amazing. |

Many Americans died on our dirt because he couldn't diplomatically diffuse the division that led to the war. Whoa! How can that be the measure used for President Buchanan? President Lincoln did no better, did he? And yet, Lincoln is celebrated as one of the greatest. For conducting a war that his own foolish actions made necessary! Talk about good press and a 'teflon' presidency! 'Other than that, Mrs. Lincoln, how was the play?' Eric The(OurAmericanCousin)Hun[>]:)] |

You know, all you guys who voted for Roosevelt are conveniently overlooking the fact that his totally incompetent Republican predesessors, Harding and Hoover, created the conditions that led to the Great Depression, made FDR's election possible, and presented him with the conditions he felt he had to respond to. In my view, 9 out of every 10 Preesidents we've had have been idiots. Better the question should have been, "Who was the Bast?" Would have been a whole lot easier to pick one[:D] |
Quoted: Carter was a dumbass for giving back the Panama Canal. I can't blame Carter here 100%. Actually what happened was Carter finished up on something Johnson had started, Nixon pretended to continue on, Ford was in just long enough to keep it alive, and then Carter got it dropped in his lap. From what I've heard about the canal is that if we hadn't turned it over, we were going to have problems. In fact, my best friend from high school was stationed down there before "Just Cause" and he has told me some of the things that went on before we went in and took Pine Apple Face. |
Oh yeah, I voted for FDR, but after thinking about it a little more and reading other posts, I'd have to go with Wilson. Often wonder what it would be like to go back in time and see what it would have been like if his opponent won, or someone of the opposite political persuasion. See if the theories would hold true or not concerning the U.S. going from isolationist to interventionist actually did cause the Japanese to attck Pearl Harbor.[:D] |
| Having known him, I will tell you forthrightly Lyndon Baines Johnson was as low a denominator both personally and politically as is humanly imaginable in a western context. He learned his politics at the knee of Speaker of the House Mr. Sam Rayburn then proceeded to use those connections in such a craven usurpation of power as to amaze even the most politically jaded. He also spun the nation into the socialist spiral that's overwhelmed our economy. Yes FDR gave him the legal infrastructure, but LBJ's thirst for political domination corrupted the framework as well as the product. |
Another vote for Lincoln. And as to who attacked first in the War of Northern Aggression, what did you expect? If you had a big-ass drunk standing in front of you wanting to fight, would you try and kick him in the nuts first, or would you wait for him to punch you in the face? I actually prefer to call it the War for Southern Independence. |
Quoted: Lincoln was anything but one of our greatest presidents. Instead he was a Tyrant. John Wilkes Booth was a Hero, and he was right when he said "Death to Tyrants" (in Latin) after he had shot Lincoln in Ford's Theatre. Yeah. Your "Hero" snuck up on an unarmed man and shot him in the back of the head. Then he ineptly ran for his life, leaving the rest of his conspirators to face the gallows without him. In addition to that, Booth killed the ONE MAN who had the will and political muscle to prevent what was called Reconstruction. You ought to pick your "Heroes" with more care. |
| Lincoln was also the first US President to endorse the concept of "Total Warfare" to the United States. He commissioned criminals, under the guise of being soldiers, to murder innocent civilians on the premise that this would encourage the populace to condemn the war and demand withdrawl by the South. This would be like us nuking Baghdad and telling the Iraqi civilians to overthrow Hussein or we would kill more civilians. Old Abe should be smoking a turd in Purgatory for that, if nothing else. |
