I'm in Huntington Beach and want to know if anyone has any recommendations on a safe mover.  I bought it from Turner's and the charge to move it initially was $50 thru them.  That, I realize is very cheap but the quotes so far are $310 from a local outfit and $232 from a mover that was referred by another safe retailer.  Any help?

It's a 675# AMSEC.  Only a threshhold to go over at the pickup house and a 4 in rise into the destination.  Flat otherwise and the length of the move is 2 mi.

$232 doesn't sound too bad.  Hell, a safe retailer will charge between $50 and $100 for delivery of a safe like that, and they even logged the sale of the safe itself.

Pay up!  It's not worth your back to even consider moving it yourself.

That is the normal rate sounds like, be sure you hire only a Safe or Piano moving company.
Do not trust someone like Two Men in a Truck.

How much does it weigh empty? I've moved my safe and other people's safes many times. Unless it is fireproof and really big, three guys with an appliance dolly should be able to handle it.

Thanks for the quick replies.  My contractor wanted to give it a go but I said no. Hell, we're all over 50 and have bad backs, LOL.  I checked on the net and even dealers were charging up to $150 for what I was wanting so the $232 sounds OK.

I believe I paid 300 dollars for delivery and setup on a ground level floor.  50 miles one way and the safe is around 1700 pounds empty.

Worth every penny.

Think Egyptian....

Use ramps and a furniture dolly to move it around.  You'll need a decent truck to haul it from point A to point B.  Keep in mind that the safe weight is biased towards the door, so it will tend to tip that way.  Measure all doorways and paths to ensure you can get it where you want.  Use lots of friends to keep it from crushing you.

I must be too cheap.  I'd not spend $300 to move a safe.  Mine weighs 800#.  When it was first delivered, my daughter and I moved it up 6 stairs by building a ramp out of 4X4's and 1" plywood.  I used a come-a-long and truck jack to move it while it sat on a furniture mover.  It rolls very easy when on the plywood.

National Security Magnum Plus.  50 cubic feet and it still isn't big enough. [:)]

I use a pallet jack from work and the back of someones pick-up to move my 850 pound safe. Two guys are strong enough to roll the thing out of the bed with a blanket under it. Once upright it moves easy enough with a pallet jack.

Heard told that you can use PVC pipe lenghts to act as rollers under the body if you don't have a jack.

If you transport yourself it make sure that it's done on its back with the door upwards as to not distress the hindge or lock.

$50 is cheap. Some movers will charge you $20 a step above the first few.

You guys are spending waaayyyy too much money!! Call a wrecker, as small as your safe is they can just pick it up & haul it where ever you need.
My smallest safe weighs about 4000 lbs, cost me $35 to have it hauled home from the guy I bought it from.

An hour ago I was reading this thread thinking O m'gosh, how am I going to get out of this one?

Ever hear of a Kmart safe? Well I have one. A Mosler. I had a rental truck  in my driveway  with a lift gate that could barely lift the much lighter of the two safes I was bringing home. I didn't need the tommylift to be able to pick up the safe, just get it off the truck without anything breaking.  We had loaded them with a forklift and set the heavier one on the gate to see what would happen. It ididn't collapse, so we finished loading.  This was on the advice of the guy  who had come to pick up the copier, who gave the benefit of his long experience and told us about the time a gate had collapsed on him when he took someones word for how much a safe he was moving weighed. He, and the locksmith who had serviced it both put the weight of the safe at about 1100-1200 pounds. The tommylift is supposed to be able to handle 1300 pounds. Somebody is way off.

At that point it was just the cripple. I had strapped the safe mainly to give me a chance to exit the truck before I became  a wet spot showing where the safe exited the truck through the front.  Everything made the trip ok so now I was home. The pallet jack made moving things pretty easy. The smaller safe came off OK. the big one sat there on the end of the truck in front of a narrow, smooth and wet tailgate.  Luckily a neighbor was available to help, and we rigged up a way to hold the safe back with straps so it wouldn't move out of control. The tommylift lowered the safe without incident. and now I have a safe rated TL15 . I don't know of any gun safe manufacturers with that rating. I looked at the Winchester safe and saw how the ten minute hammer and chisel attack could easily be successful. I wanted something better, and cheaper, and I think I have that now.
