So I have an upcoming work related trip to the great state of California. I will be out there for a little over a week (San Fran area). I know that I can not bring my CCW, so I was thinking of picking up a new folding blade to bring with me on the trip.

Are there any laws I need to be aware of? A quick search showed anything is game as long as it's "open carry". But this will not work for me on this trip. It must be concealed / pocket carry.

My concerns are blade length, assisted opening, clips that hang outside of pocket (not being 100% concealed).

I will be working closely with local PD, and would hate to have my balls busted / losing a $100 benchmade or worse if caught after hours walking back to my hotel after a bite to eat with a few beers.

Any info would be greatly appreciated...

Three inch blade does not raise eyebrows.  I know someone who was stopped (open carry) with a 6" fixed blade buck knife.  Cops asked him what it was for and he explained he worked at a paper recycling place and had to slash cardboard.  They said OK and let him go.  Now, if it had been concealed, it would have been a felony.

Thanks, that's what I was thinking.

Their "open carry laws" are very clear. Their "concealed laws" leave a lot of room for officer judgement.

Can anyone recommend a reasonably priced knife that does not need a lot of "break in" time for quick opening? I wasn't given a lot of notice about this trip and unfortunately I lost my benchmade about a year ago and never replaced it...

I would just go to Walmart and pick up a Kershaw. Find one you like.

Don't be surprised if the TSA agent likes it too and removes it from your checked bag.

What part of the Bay Area specifically?

Wal-Mart has done decent $4 folders right now. Buy one when you get there

I did not even think of the tsa angle, thanks...

I guess a pitstop at a local walmart after landing may have to do. Or maybe if I see something nice out there I could mail it back before I leave.

We'll be about 40 miles southeast of San Fran, but I'm sure there will be a trip or 2 into the Bay Area during our down time.
