Hi all.

I have a question about cancer.

My dad had his prostrate removed and has been cancer free for 3 years now.

About two months ago his urologist checked him again and confirmed he was still free from cancer, two weeks ago he was at his GP who removed a bunch of melanoma from my dad, at this time my dad told him he had a very painful back and thought it could be his kidneys.
The Doctor told him that he didn't think it was his kidneys and that he wanted to do some extra tests, this past weekend they get a call from the Super Clinic with news that the blood tests were concerning and he needs to go in on Sunday for xrays.

My mom is beside herself and both her and my dad are not getting any sleep due to the worry this has caused, they are convinced that as per the doctors speculation (He had not yet done the tests) that the cancer may be back and in his bones.

My question is, does this have to be cancer, could the blood tests have uncovered something else that may not be cancer, like a kidney issue, or a liver issue which may need xrays or is a concerning blood test requiring xrays definitely something cancer related?

Thanks in advance for any responses, I do realize this is difficult because obviously know one here has seen or examined my dad, but I just need to know, does this HAVE to be cancer or could a blood test pick up on anything else?

I've experienced what you're going through now, and I can sympathize with you.
It could be anything, but until the tests come back, you won't really know.
Until then, hope for the best, prepare for the worst and be ready to offer support when needed.
If you think you need a second opinion, get it.  Try to get them to move as quickly as possible, because time is of the essence.
Waiting days to take a test and then days to get results back is not good for anyone.
I wish you the best, and keep us updated if you can.

Thank you my friend.

With all my issues right now I feel selfish for being concerned about me and my health, then I start thinking of my dad, the best person I know and what this is doing to him, how strong he is being for my mom, but it's getting to her too, they have hardly slept because of this, my dad it still hiding the pain from her and trying to keep her from worrying, but we can see it's getting to him. He is a tough old bloke though, a veteran of the Rhodesian bush war, he has survived terrorists in that war, he has taken lives to defend us when we were kids and people broke in with machetes. He has always been bigger and stronger than life itself and now we are faced with this and I feel ashamed for not being as strong as he is and this is affecting him directly.

Thanks for the well wishes mate, I'll try to update as we learn more.

It's pretty standard to get some Xrays in *any* Prostate Cancer patient with back pain... since that's a common site of metastasis.

But is it likely to be that?  No... statistically it's far more likely to be garden-variety musculoskeletal back strain.

Prayers to your father, yourself, and your family.

You mentioned that your father's Urologist checked him a couple of months ago.  Did he do blood tests at the time?  If so, I think something to stay positive about, is that whatever is wrong with your dad, probably occurred pretty recently.

In any event, stay positive, OP

Thank you all for the prayers and well wishes and advice.

I don't have too many friends in New Zealand, just the way things are. But over the years ARFCOM has been a good friend to me, I've laughed with /at you all and and cried with and for you. Dphill in particular has been a fantastic friend and whether he knows it or not he as helped me through times I would rather forget.

So, once again, for this contribution of advice, prayers and well wishes for mine and my families well being, thank you all. If I don't get a chance in the near future to say it, I wish you all a Merry and safe Christmas and for 2016 I wish you all health, wealth and happiness.

Thanks again
Jason

I want to thank everyone here for the prayers and good wishes. We have good news

We found out today that my dad does NOT have more cancer and as far as they can tell is is cancer free, the reason for his back issues is not critical, it is some sort of severe arthritis.

So thank you once again to everyone.
