In the last two weeks, Windows updates have jacked up two different computers. I can remember at least two other times I've had to undo Windows updates to get my computers to function. I do not understand how a company can push out "updates" that cause serious malfunctions. This is the kind of crap that causes to people to buy Macs.

The worst is automatic updates. Microsoft sneaks into your computer and breaks it while you're asleep. I'm sick of computer "experts" droning on about how important it is to keep your computer up to date.

Here's my approach:

1. Turn off automatic updates.
2. Don't install any "recommended" updates. Only install the essential ones.
3. Wait a long time between updates so hopefully Microsoft fixes them before you install them.
4. Get real familiar with the process of uninstalling updates.
5. Whenever your computer starts doing wacko crap out of the blue, uninstall your most recent updates.

I don't dare "upgrade" to Windows 10 for fear of the wrath of hell it will unleash upon my computing.

I know . . . Cool story, bro.

That used to be good advice.  But Microsoft has been shooting itself in the foot repeatedly since their big Windows 10 push started.  I haven't turned off automatic updates yet, but I have turned off the recommended updates, like you have done.

KB3097877. It broke a bunch of shit. It's the first update I've seen do that since I've been managing updates.
