In 1071, the Muslim Seljuk Turks defeated the Byzantines led by their Emperor Romanus IV Diogenes. The result:
" ..... the destruction of every Anatolian city, town, and farm and the execution of everyone in them. Hundreds of thousands of Byzantine citizens were killed or sold as slaves, and Asia Minor was for generations after a wasteland. The Turks accomplished what seemed to be the goal of the steppe nomads, to have as much grassland as possible for their horses. Physically, the region was never the same." Paul K. Davis, "100 Decisive Battles". So. A generation before the First Crusade a massive genocide is committed against Christians by Muslims. |

Huh. Here's all wikipedia has to say about that:
The Battle of Manzikert was fought near the town in August 1071. In one of the most decisive defeats in Byzantine history, the Seljuk sultan Alp Arslan defeated and captured Emperor Romanus Diogenes. The Turkish victory led to the ethnic and religious transformation of Armenia and Anatolia, the establishment of the Seljuk Sultanate of Rum, and later the Ottoman Empire and the Republic of Turkey. The Seljuks pillaged Manzikert itself, killed much of its population, and burned the city to the ground.[3] Seems a bit light on the details. |
