How necessary are they?  If the need arises that you would wear armor how would you rate the necessity vs. weight factor?

Last year I made the decision to trust my life on the street to Second Chance body armor. I got the level IIa because it stops the most rounds. plus I got the Trauma Plate for the front.

maybe duct tape?

You remember black hawk down and the dude that took his plate out.

IIRC he got shot in the back.

If everything goes just fine - you won't need it.

My main concern is my spine.

A 9mm round deforms the Kevlar about 1-2 inches.

I'm not so sure my vertebrae would like that very much.

I KNOW it wouldn't like a .357 mag or .44 mag to the spine.

Which proves that if you are in a movie - you should wear it.

Might be hot, perhaps painful to remove.

Just throw a phone book in your plate carrier instead.  Should be good enough.

Better to have and not need. I think if I took one in the spine I'd call it quits right there.

That might work just long enough for your partner to get the rifle assembled, and return fire.

Plates and plate carriers only cover your vitals which leaves a good portion of your torso exposed. Wearing half of that seems kinda pointless.

If it's a comfort thing a set of multicurved plates is the way to go. Much more comfortable. I wore mine bike riding and it was way better than my single curved plates

There are several reasons you should wear front/back protection but the simplest one is "so you don't get shot in the back".

It's really not complicated.

Go put on a plate carrier with a plate and all your pouches and ammo in the front and no back plate.

Then revisit this thread.

I think front plate only would get annoying on its own

Ranger Body Armor in Somalia didn't HAVE a back plate pocket.  Protective Materials didn't even make a back plate version until 1994 for the Haiti invasion (Scott M, the VP, delivered the first one directly to me).

Do you like getting shot?

If not, buy armor. A full set of steel plates in a cheap carrier is cheap insurance. Yeah it may not stop high velocity rifle rounds at close range, but it will stop pistol rounds which are 90%+ of criminal use.

You get your history from movies.  I get it.

General Wayne Downing showed a vest and photos of a Ranger hit in the back of the soft armor with 7.62x54R.  Big pancake-sized bruises, no penetration.

That's if you get the extra trauma plate...  is it rated to stop .338 Lapua like all the street gangs carry?

Thats why we are talking about PLATES not soft armor. Most plates will laugh at 9mm.

I like to put multiple plates on my back, just in case I need to get away from someone shooting .338 LM at me.

Uh, no.

From least protection to most in soft body armor it goes Level I, Level IIA, Level II, then Level IIIA.

III and IV have hard plates.

If you have ceramics, they can be damaged by regular falls, impacts, dropping the plates, etc.  They're plenty durable, but sometimes shit happens.

If you have a rear plate, you have a spare readily at hand so you can keep a good condition one up front even if you have an oops.

I never really noticed the weight but I was driven around everywhere and never had to hump more than a couple hundred meters...at a slow walk.

Seriously though, if you're in moderately good shape, the vest ain't all that bad.  Just make sure someone else carries the baseplate.

No shit. How much do you enjoy your lower back? Don't care for it? Don't worry about the plate in the back.

Added bonus is that when you're peeling back and get shot with your back turned to the bad guys, you might just live to finish your movement.

If you are so smart/good that you know no one will ever be behind you or that your back will never be turned toward the ones shooting at you, then you don't need plates at all. The fact of the matter is that you never know from what direction rounds will be fired at you or how many shooters there will be in a situation that requires you to be wearing armor in the first place.
