Alright guys, I'm going to leave this decision-making in the cheetoed, basement-dwelling hands of the hive.

Long story short, I'm participating in a Secret Santa, and my target is logging to get into smoking.  I know absolutely nothing about smokers, so I am hoping to get some guidance on what to set him up with.  I'd like to get him a smoker and any necessary accessories (thermometers, etc).

A few requirements:

- He would like a propane smoker.  Not looking to turn this thread into an argument about the best fuel source.
- The smoker must be drop-shippable, as my target lives several states away.
- I'd like to keep the budget on the smoker under 300 dollars, unless there's something that is absolutely recommended not too far above it.

Other than that, go wild. I appreciate the information and advice.

Hope everyone is having an excellent Thanksgiving!

Thanks again!

Read here for smoker/grill reviews.  http://amazingribs.com/bbq_equipment_reviews_ratings/equipment-reviews?field_manufacturer_target_id=All&field_prod_function_tid%5B%5D=2&field_fuel_tid%5B%5D=2&field_price_value%5B%5D=2

Besides the smoker he will really need a good dual thermometer, I recommend the Maverick ET-733.

He'll play hell getting decent bark with propane due to the water vapor it gives off as it burns.  That being said, the amazingribs.com reviews are all trustworthy.
