I don't think there is much money to be made on ARs right now. Stuff is dirt cheap. Plus, if you manufacture the rifle, there is a separate tax for selling the complete rifle, and a different FFL to make weapons. I would find another way to make money without a shit ton of paperwork and bitchy customers. Good luck

work at a gun shop for 6 months to a year before even thinking of opening your own

Also, you will have ZERO name recognition and will have to undercut the competition in price and quality who has the name, plus economy of scale on their side to get much more than boutique customers. It would be a fun project, but not a "job" unless you are willing to do the work. I would say that it would take years for it to pay off unless something unexpected happened. Follow your dreams anyway. If nothing else, get a retail job first and realize how much people suck.

I hate to be discouraging, but I would advise you to pick another way to make money.

I could laugh, but instead I will answer your question.

Breaking into the firearms trade is NOT a winning gambit (especially right now).
Lots of outlay for product, lots of advertising, lots of hours.

You have the time to spend 14-16 hours each day (no holidays) ?

You have trustworthy employees?

You have  unlimited patience to deal with less than knowledgeable customers ?

It's a tough job, and without a "niche" it will be difficult to make profitable.

Me, I'm an 02 FFL, and 03 SOT.

Then I saw how you can order uppers and such with out going through an FFL store front. My father owns two CNC billet machines, so I thought to my self I could just make them! Now here comes some questions.

Better be an 07 FFL or you're in the deep.
Research will help a lot.

1. Welcome to the sickness, Hutch12!

2. Guns are a low-profit item - You can't sell them for much more than it costs you to buy them. So, you have to sell an awful lot of them in order to have any money left over after paying all the normal expenses of running a gun store.

3. Starting out in the job market, the best strategy is seek a good-paying job first, and get well-established. Then, with a healthy bank account and all your bills paid, you can go looking for your dream job.

What does he mean? He's saying you'll dump or lose money opening up a gun store.
Can you compete with on line buying power. Do you have $$$$ to out buy Davidsons or Buds in order to offer guns priced to move. Are you ready to start an account with every holster and accessory company?  WHY?
Because every swinging dick know it all, that walks through your door already knows amazon.com or pricierthanwater has it an easy $10-20 less then you will. That includes FREE SHIPPING AND. No state sales tax.
Save your money and find your next ex wife. Believe me she's gonna take every penny, faster and with less headaches than a gun store will.

Brutal, vicious, but correct.

It's good to have a dream. I wish you luck on attaining your's.

Maybe one day, I can say I remember when Hutch12 was a senior in high school, and was making his rifles on his dad's equipment.

So uh, I am looking for one of those Fabri-kay Nationals compact 9mm pistols. Any chance you could package it with an Alien Gear holster and give me a discount? Also I'm gonna need that to be on layaway.

I thought I would  want to open a gunstore. I wroked in one for  two years... After the first year I decided I didn't want to follow that dream anymore and would really be setting myself up for a nightmare. Some gun enthusiats can be difficult to work with. Some have attidutes and look down upon the counter guy because they know it all (dont be that guy either).  They are cheap, they will go down the street to a box store after 30 minutes of free information and finger fucking your merchandise to save 20 dollars. You will have guns pointed at you daily. You will have that odd Schizoid character that wants to show you his carry gun and gets mad when you ask him to leave it in the holster. You will gain 15-30 pounds. People will bring in "unloaded" guns, hand them to you, and when you clear it a round will come out of the chamber. One of those people may or may not blow a hole through your wall, or into a chair before you can clear it. You will see significant others of women telling them they "need a J frame" when they have never fired a gun before and get upset when you suggest she pick something out based on comfort and rent it at the gun range before buying. You will be asked not less than three times per day if you have a clip for a 9mm. When you ask them to specify make and model you may get, 'a black one" or just "a nine millimeter" and then be asked to play guess the gun because they left it at home. Go work in one first before you apply for that FFL.

After working in my family's gun store on and off for nearly a decade...everything this guy says, 100% will happen, twice a day, three more times on Saturday.
