[ARCHIVED THREAD] - Windows Update killed my computer (Page 1 of 2)

So I left my desktop in sleep mode last night, and woke up to find it running. I saw there were updates to install last night but I didn't realize that Windows Update could force a computer out of sleep in order to install them. So I rebooted (by default my computer boots into Linux which is where I'm posting from now), Windows showed the "configuring updates, don't turn off your computer" screen. Then, instead of a log in prompt, the screen stays blank (except for the blue log-in background), the mouse cursor "activity wheel" keeps spinning forever and the screen starts flickering black. Trying to boot into safe mode does the same thing, the screen just flickers at a slower frequency. I never get a login. |
|
Happened to me once.
I lost power during the "configuring updates, don't turn off your computer" blue screen and lost everything. I had to re-install everything including Windoze. Luckily I had a Western Digital My Drive hooked up to it that constantly backs up every change made and it wasn't too bad, but it still took forever. |

I've done that several times and it has a mind of it's own. Auto updates return without my knowledge. Any experts know why? Quoted:

I hope someone chimes in on this one. (Before I fire my IT company). All this time I thought "I DO NOT WANT ANY FUCKING AUTO UPDATES TO MY COMPUTER" was too hard to understand. |

Got an update also last night, OS seems to be OK, but got some wonky stuff going on with Outlook. Keeps locking up and closing every time I try and delete an email. Pissing me off. Same here. You really shouldn't use Outlook. |
|
I can't help the OP, but I had to uninstall the updates because one of them prevented me from playing DVD's. I reinstalled and everything works fine. It's possible that Microsoft recalled one of the updates that I originally installed before I did the reinstall. |

Pisses me off, still waiting for updated drivers from MS to fix the problem. Dell does not make drivers for it that are compatible with Win10. |

You have to disable 'Windows Update' in the services tab. |

Reports are that KB3097877 may be the faulty KB. https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windows/en-US/336eae75-b5f4-41ea-bd2b-5f0248585a66/blank-screen-after-pressing-ctrlaltdel-for-login-after-windows-updates-no-way-of-logging-in-on?forum=w7itpronetworking https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3097877 Yup, that's the one. Uninstall it, shut off automatic updates for a few days, and life returns to normal. |

I can't even boot into safe mode or with a command prompt. Windows 7 btw Force it to safe boot. Try pressing the Windows and "R" key at the same time, then type in "msconfig" and hit enter. Under the boot tab, check the box "safe boot" and reboot. ETA: make sure to not type in the quotation marks. Once you finish making changes and are want it to boot as normal, go back and set it to boot normally again. |

When troubleshooting, I always walk someone through using GUI unless I am having them repair the master boot record etc.. |

Because they want everyone on W10 so they can transition to their plan to make everyone pay an on-going rental fee for Windows The IT column in the paper said something about the upgrade to 10 being optional now but that eventually the MS folks will make it a mandatory element of Windows updates in the future |

They will never be legally able to force you to update. |

Not even in the form of a subscription fee. They're following the Apple OS model here. Subscriptions for their Office services, not for the OS itself. |

It does a lot of stuff, but it's not there yet. |
