Does anyone know of a good source of high quality topo maps online?  The Forest Service used to sell great 1:25 quad sheets at ranger stations, but I'm not sure they're still available.  I'd also be interested in non US Forest areas.  Any ideas?

Thanks, all.  I'd just left the USGS site and somehow missed the "map locator".

I print my own from the USGS site and from Caltopo.

Once you figure out Caltopo it is probably the best site around.

https://caltopo.com/

Make sure you have a scale to check the maps after you print them.    I had to try a few times until I got the scale right.

You have to search for the area, then click mark area or something like that.   You drag a pin to the area and it lists all the maps you can buy or download.

Caltopo is the best I've found for using with google earth, the overlay actually lines up correctly.

Yup.  You can stack a few layers and print at any scale you want.   They also include a scale at the bottom and magnetic declenation diagram although it does not have grid north to true north offset.

That'd be one mighty big map or an exceptionally small piece of ground covered by the map.
