My friend has a new Dell Inspiron 5749 with only 1 HDMI port and a couple USB ports. Currently he has an HDMI cable running to one external monitor which gives him 2 total screens. He needs 3. What is the easiest way to hook up two external monitors so that he can use a monitor on each side of his laptop in addition to his laptop display so that he has 3 individual displays? Is something like a Matrox DualHead2Go the only option or is running something like the Diamond USB to HDMI adapter(s) the way to go. I have a Matrox TripleHead2Go unit, but it uses a DVI-DL input or VGA input and none of the adapters I've tried from his HDMI port to the unit will get it running. I appreciate any insight. |

Quoted: Hmmm...well, the simplest solution would be to use the laptop as a laptop, and buy a real desktop pc with a decent video card. It would be, but we move out offices every so often and most everybody in our business uses a laptop so he bought a laptop without consulting me. Now I stuck trying to help him out. I have a desktop and a 6' folding table with 3 24" monitors here in my 'portable office' setup. I did use the triplehead unit with my laptop for some time, but it has a VGA outlet.

This is rather simple. Use USB monitors. Or a USB video card. http://www.amazon.com/StarTech-External-Video-Monitor-Adapter/dp/B005G306I2 |

If you have USB 3.0 ports, you can get some decent performance using USB to VGA/HDMI/DVI adapters. Basically a USB video card. If they're USB 2.0, you can still do it. Tell ya what, PM me, I have some extra Triton USB/VGA adapters that I got from work. We used them in the WinXP days to give dual-monitor capabilities to some Dell GX270 desktop computers. Not gonna be high performance, but it'll give you another output for a monitor. All I'd want is some $$ for shipping, you'll have to look around for the driver, or see if Windows will find one when you plug it in. |

Well, we decided on a Dell USB 3.0 Triple Display Ultra-HD Universal Dock (D3100)which has 3 HDMI out ports. $119.00 with a warranty. Should be here Tuesday. Thanks for all the suggestions! I'd have never thought to look at docking stations to solve his quandary. |
