If you look close you can see the magic smoke escaping from my drill press.

It had been making some noise for a while and I thought it was the bearing on the drill shaft.
Well it started making more noise and then some sparks with a lot of smoke from the motor. Now it just hums when I try and turn it on.
Pulled the belts off and the spindle (thats the word I was looking for above ) spins free and the middle pulley is free. Motor, not so much.

That sucks op, probably just a $5 dollar bearing that went out on the motor.

Same thing happened to me on a air compressor, I just need to press the bearing off the armature shaft and find one like it

Would a bearing cause sparks and burning smell?

Now it has cooled a bit and still runs.

Afraid to let it run too long though. And still have the belts off it so just the motor running.
Would it matter if I ran it if it is the windings and getting it rewound?

Taking it apart before guessing, usually helps.  The more you run it the more damage you'll do. Not to mention potential for catching fire. How close is the main to the press when is really takes off?

Ok not going to run it. And are you talking about main breaker?

If so , it's about 3ft away.

I figure it would have tripped the branch ckt but didn't trip anything. I hit the off switch when I saw the sparks out the vent on bottom of the motor.
