Does anyone have any experience with the German Fernspan packs? Or can anyone suggest something similar in a $70-150 price range

Never even heard of them, but I'm not a big backpacker. You could try Lightfighter.com's forums, lots of advice there about packs, LBV, and other gear used to keep moving.

I've never seen nor worn one of these packs, and so can't speak directly, but I have done a significant amount of hiking/backpacking/trekking/climbing and the #1 most important feature of any backpack, I think, is fit.  If you like the features of this pack, then do try it on for size, but only if you can return it if it doesn't suit you perfectly.  A well-fitting pack has an amazing ability to lighten the perception of the load, and an ill-fitting pack is miserable.
