First off let me state that I make no claim to any expertise dealing with computers. I use it to surf the interwebz, do my taxes, write a few letters, check & send emails, pay a few bills, buy tons of ammo and accessories and other shit my wife says I don't need, and play spider solitaire.
I can replace a hard drive, upgrade RAM, replace the hinges, download and install programs, etc & etc. Apparently I know just enough to really fuck one up. With that being said, please post any replies in plain, simple English if at all possible. If you start talking like an IT guy, I will most likely not understand any of it and just look at the screen like a dog that hears a strange noise. The problem: The hard drive in my Dell laptop was starting to make funny noises, so I decided a preemptive strike was necessary. I purchased and installed a new hard drive, inserted the Windows 7 disc, and proceeded to install. Everything went without a hitch. That is until I tried to run windows update. It just sits there and says it is searching for updates, but never finds or downloads or installs any. It will do this for hours if I let it. I have internet connection and can go to any website I want with no problem. I tried it with antivirus on, antivirus off, and antivirus not even installed. I downloaded and installed the latest/greatest windows update agent. I downloaded and ran microsoft "fix it" and it didn't fix shit. I've tried formatting and re-installing. Hell, since I have both 32 and 64 bit discs, I tried with both and got the same result. I've been messing with this thing on and off since Thursday with no luck. Anybody ran into this before? If so, what turned out to be the cause and what did you do to fix it? |

Try this Open Windows Update Click on Change Settings change settings to 'Never Update' OK out and reboot now go back and change the settings back to Automatic OK out and reboot Now try a check for Windows Updates again. I have no idea if it will work. But it won't hurt anything and may get it unstuck. |

I have no personal experience with the problem, but I did find this on the internet... |
| I just had This same problem, there is a MS update repair utility here. http://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2700567. I tried it a few time without success, what finally worked was not telling windows to look for updates. I just restarted the computer and let it sit for a few hours and let it do its thing. Then it told me there was 260 updates that took 4 hours to install. I think it's just the huge number of updates that causes it to choke. |

I have W7 installed on my backup desktop that had been turned off for almost 8 months. One weekend I decided to turn it on to get updates and it sat there and chugged for almost 16 hours before it finally started installing all the missed updates (I just let it run when I went to bed). Then after re-start it took another 4 hours to get updates that didn't install because they were follow ups to the missing ones.... |

I guess I will just let it sit there running update and check on it again sometime tomorrow.
When I first installed windows 7 on it a couple of years ago, it would find a bunch of updates, I would install them, reboot, run update again, find more install them, reboot... lather, rinse, repeat. |

If that doesn't work, then there probably really is a problem. |

That's what I tried doing at first too but it would just sit there at checking for updates even waiting several hours. When I let windows discover the updates on its own it found the updates in less time then I waited when using system update in the control panel. Eta: Maybe it was saving the updates it found all along and that's just when it got to the end. I was researching the problem on another computer and when I got back there they were. |

While leaving it on to get all the Windows updates, I would also suggest hard wiring it to your network if possible. This. Windows Update initiates some processes where it recursively is doing version and dependency checking. I remember a tech guy telling me that any kind of interruption (including packets dropping while your wifi cycles session keys) will fuxor it up. Wire it up and wait a couple days. |

Question: have you downloaded and installed the Dell drivers yet or are you doing this just off a fresh install of Windows? Manufacturers submit device drivers to M$ so if your drivers are out of date the Windows Update will take much longer. Much, much longer. Set the power settings to "High Performance" so your computer doesn't go to sleep and just let it run. |
