I've seen references  link  "link left cold" and such . Explain to a puter illiterate why this is sometimes necessary .

If you hotlink to a poll for instance, they can track where the hits came from.  Better to be all ninja about that shit, yo.

It's called a referrer, websites can see where you are coming from

If you follow a "hot" link they linked-to site will know who the referrer is (AR15.com).

Why is this important?

Polls (aka Fire Missions) could discount the results if too high a percentage comes from one site.

As far as DU goes, we just don't want any additional attention from them.

When NOT to hot link:
When putting up a Fire Mission or linking to DU (Democratic Underground, huge socialist site).
