Hired a contractor that lives around the corner to fix a leaking skylight.

We have 3, only one was leaking.

He can right away and redid 2 of the 3, no more leaks.

He has never come back to finish the 3rd redo, no calls, wanting to get paid, etc, been over a month now.

I will gladly pay him cash when he does the 3rd one, but no call, or anything.

What the fuck is up with that?

Sounds like you will just have to pay for one skylight.

Is the third skylight within 500 feet of a school? If so, he may not be allowed back.

Told wife I am not calling him, I owe him money, and he needs to finish the job.

Contractors on this site, don't make homeowners work to get you to finish a job. Thx

Once upon a time, I needed a stainless steel tub welded up. No problem, my dad knew a guy who owned a fab shop. I called him and gave him the dimensions. A week later he drops it off and says he'll mail me a bill. Ok!

About a month later I call his shop and his wife answers. I ask about the bill. "Oh, that was his idea of a joke. He loves doing things like that. There won't be any bill."

Cool.

I am very happy not to pay him as he fixed my issue.

But I am a good guy and want work on the signed contract done before I pay up.

He is a roofing contractor, my guess he got a big job and mine takes second fiddle.

No problem with me, he fixed the original issue.

Or do you think he find something on the roof he wants no part off?

No dead hookers up there last I checked.

I have clients that are slow as hell to bill their customers for work.  I then get to listen to them complain about not having enough money to pay me, the IRS, themselves, their child support, etc.

Did you check the creepy thread.  He might have a story on it regarding your roof.

It's a thought.

it shouldn't be, but it is..

(I'm in commercial construction and we could never get away with that)...

Not my problem, he can call me if so.

All you residential contractors here, we are tired of your shit, call, tell us what is going on, no I will be there at 8:00am and show up at 4:00pm, it is rampant in that industry.

My dad hired a guy years ago to cut a rectangular hole in his foundation wall so he could install a window.  My dad pretty regularly tries to help out the little guy, so he called the number on a flyer someone put on his truck outside the hardware store.  The guy showed with a milk crate containing a hammer, an extension cord and a reciprocating saw.  Gave some sob story about losing his wallet so he couldn't rent the proper equipment.  My dad rented the saw and about 10 minutes into him cutting, this guy was it became obvious this guy was clearly in over his head.  My dad thanked him for his time, let him keep the deposit and sent him on his way.  The guy was rather adamant about returning the saw for my dad and when my dad refused he actually followed him all the way to where he rented it.

When my dad got back he noticed the guy left his milk crate and tools behind.  He called the guy and was told he be by the next day to pick them up.  The next day turned into 3 months during which my dad left several voicemails asking the guy to get his stuff.  About 3 months passed and I was talking with my dad on the phone when I asked if the guy had ever showed up.  Coincidentally, the guy finally called back that morning.  Apparently, he got picked up on a warrant and spent 90 days in jail for time he had hanging over his head.

Job isn't finished yet.  If the contract was for three skylights, at most he can make you pay for in court is two.

I know, I will pay him for 2 if he claims a hardship and can't finish the 3rd, but no call, knock on the door, anything, he lives 1/4 mile away, has to drive past my house every day.

Yeah, that dog doesn't hunt all that well when speaking to the man/women who has a complete view of their financial existence.

Funny thing about not paying the IRS / State Government:  clients tend to go from  apathetic to attentive at the drop of a hat when they have the vast majority of the contents of their bank accounts seized.

Sometimes schedules are fucked. Maybe he doesn't have time to finish and did it as a favor. Who knows. He probably has 60 other customers he's trying to keep up with. Just give him a call and ask about the third and mention you haven't received a bill.  It's not rocket science

When his accountant finds an unpaid job and tells him that he needs to file a lien on this old unpaid job, is why.

I think you need to tie this up-send a registered letter describing the work done and requesting a final bill for that, and a schedule for the remaining work.

Not a lawyer, but this kind of thing can come back in a major PITA way.  At least you want to clear the payments for the work done.
