Stopped mowing for a minute to tie up a couple plants that were in the way, set the engine to idle. After about a minute I heard a quick loud screeching noise and then the engine stopped.
Starter cord won't budge, so I unplugged the spark plug wire, set it on it's side, and tried to move the mower blade with the clutch engaged. Lots of resistance, but it moved a little. I think I was actually pulling it against the clutch. I removed the starter housing, it the starter pulls and recoils fine. I was able to turn the engine 1/10th of a turn with a breaker bar, but holy hell was it tough. So is it screwed? Is it worth my time to tinker with it, or should I just find a different mower? Mower is an older Honda SX self propelled. |

Yep, sounds like it's seized up. Shit doesn't last forever. Nope, not worth "tinkering". Not even worth a new engine replacement. Just get another mower and give that mower to a kid wanting to learn about motors so that he can take it apart. Tinkering will require at least a new cylinder sleeve, piston, rings, not to mention gaskets, spark plug, likely rebuild the carb. But if that did it in bearings will will be next. Then add the time to do it all, not worth it. |

Try removing the spark plug and squirting some oil or ATF on the cylinder walls - and then work the breaker bar some more. Quoted:

sounds more like the engine safety brake to me I looked for one of these, but it doesn't seem to have it. I tore apart the entire underside... blade, clutch plates, everything, and there's no brake down there. Am I missing something? The engine is a Honda GCV160. |
