I need a router that will work all over my house.  Anyone have any suggestions for the router with the best range?

None of them are going to be particularly powerful, but you can add a high gain antenna at minimum and a signal booster with the antenna at most to get yourself some pretty impressive coverage.

Stick with what you have and try an omnidirectional antenna, correctly mounted and positioned efficiently, see how far that gets you.

I have an asus RT-AC68U aka AC1900 and it covers my entire quarter acre lot plus about 30'-40'.  Bigger problem is penetrating some walls, etc.

This and this.  Light years ahead of the typical consumer grade gear from Asus, D-Link, Linksys, Netgear, etc.

What's the distance for this?

I would like to be able to sit by my firepit and have my laptop if I wanted but the firepit is about 200 feet from the house and a few walls away from the router now.  Would it reach?

I bought the latest Archer. Don't think you're getting 200' though.

Mikrotik  My house is 3300sqft with an office in 1 corner of the house. 2 levels and we get coverage everywhere. Only router I have used that made that happen. I have used quite a few including ASUS RT-AC66U which I had to return because of power cycling issues. Setup is tricky, there are youtube videos on the installation tho. 200ft, you still may need a wifi extender.

How about a range extender? I am thinking going that route, looks like you just plug them into a wall socket. My plan is I have a sunroom type deal on my house and want one of those in there to try and make it maybe 150 feet to my shop.

The specs for the long range model say up to 600 feet.  I have the standard model as it meets my needs in my one story ranch, so I can't comment on coverage for the long range model.  Obviously, there are various factors that affect signal strength and range.  I suspect it would be sufficient for your needs though.  Another nice thing is that you can add a second AP if coverage is not handled by just one.  Toss up a second one and make sure it's transmitting on a different channel from the first one (choose channels 1, 6, or 11) and you should be golden.

even if the router can blast a long distance signal to the laptop, wouldn't the laptop also have to be capable of sending back a signal just as far? it's a two way communication right?

i'm thinking range extender might be better.

It will probably reach or you could do one side of a wireless bridge for outside. put this outside
