The 'drummers- epic solo' thread reminded me of this. A friend is part of a small band that does local gigs. He says that they don't worry too much about a drummer because "all drummers are alcoholics." Is this true, or even partly true?

Guitarists are a dime a dozen. Bass players are less common. Good drummers are rare.

The two pro drummers I know are workout fiends. One does smoke a lot of weed, however.

They're really not so bad as long as they don't spontaneously combust.

IME, drummers are kinda spoiled because the demand is so high.  there are a billion guitarists/singers, and anyone can play enough bass to put a gig together.  but no drums = no gig.

as a result, drummers can get away with pretty much anything, and they know it.  i suspect that the process of learning to play the drums also selects for a certain kind of person.

Drummers tend to be in great shape but party hard.  I don't think limiting them to alcoholic status is sufficient.  The cleaner the musician the shittier the music (generally).

I would have died in a hotel room in London during my 4th world tour if I had taken a liking to drugs. Instead, I drink a few bud lights and play the intro to "Nothing else matters" for an hour.

Yes.

If I had to pick which member of a band was a drunk, a felon, unemployed, divorced, has multiple children by multiple women...  I will pick the drummer every time.

I agree with this. I've been out of the scene for a long time but that is why I learned how to do a little of all of it. Drummers and singers were always hard to find.

What do you call a guy who hangs out with 3 musicians?

The drummer.

Drummers are not right... anyone that can do something different with each hand and each foot can't be normal.
Good ones are hard to find, good ones that are dependable are even harder to find. Drunks..I would say no more than your average

musician. I have never known a good drummer that couldn't play other things too. The drummer in a band I was with back in the 80's

could play the guitar, banjo, mandolin along with being a kick butt drummer. Our current drummer plays the keyboard too and would rather

play keys but we need a dependable drummer too bad to let him move to them,,

Another musician who would agree that drummers do party hard.

Everybody plays guitar in a band . . . few non-drummers do so I would heartily agree they get away with whatever they want

The drummer at our community theatre is not a drunk.

And I don't think Karen Carpenter was a drunk IIRC .

Beats me.

I play the 88's and we are as pure as the driven snow.....

Just ask Jerry Lee Lewis...
