They run a modified version of Android. You can root them and install the full google play store, but outta the box they come with amazon's own app store and a very limited selection of apps.
If you'd like to avoid all that, just get a regular Android tablet. You can get the kindle app, or google books works just as well. |

Gets very heavy use. I don't like Android tablets. That's what an iPad is for. I like reading on the Paperwhite much better than on my iPad. Better battery life, too, than a tablet. |
