[ARCHIVED THREAD] - Tesla Model X (Page 1 of 2)

should have had a more traditional flat SUV backend instead of that rounded hatchback I'm guessing it's for aerodynamic reasons (less energy required to move it). I'm way out of my lane though, so it's just a guess. It can't be coincidence that so many cars striving for maximum efficiency coalesce around a similar design. |

Are they still sticking with the gullwing doors? I heard someone asked them, "So where does all the snow go when you open it?" Engineers: "Snow?" Not that most people around here bother, but you're supposed to brush the roof off. ![]() http://www.joeydevilla.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2014/11/snow-on-the-roof.jpg ![]() That is, at that point I believe, a matter of pride rather than laziness. |

FWIW as a comparison, this is the new Prius. http://o.aolcdn.com/dims-global/dims3/GLOB/legacy_thumbnail/750x422/quality/95/http://www.blogcdn.com/slideshows/images/slides/359/148/4/S3591484/slug/l/006-toyota-prius-spy-shots-1.jpg It should also cost about a third of the price of the Model X, too!

They aren't direct competitors, but as a few where comparing it to the Prius (and the pics where just released) I figured it was worth including in the discussion. The new Prius (with its Geo Storm back end) is a mess and the Model X is a big ole bitch. |

Prius has a 2 piece rear window split horizontally. Cars in pics don't. Cars designed for aerodynamics by computers tend to look very similar. Quoted:

looks like a fucking prius Prius has a 2 piece rear window split horizontally. Cars in pics don't. Cars designed for aerodynamics by computers tend to look very similar. i get that. why's it got to look like a prius? it looks like a freakin' prius. don't gimme no 'it doesn't have a two window horizontal split' whatever..... according to this link, it has a msrp of $80,000. let's see what else might go for a similar price.... Ok, the viper starts about $10k more... and who doesn't like the Z06?can mod this sexy bitch out to the tune of $20k after buying it just to get into the same price range... caddy looks cleeeeeeeaaaaan looks like a prius, and i don't care if it gets 100+ mpg, if i had $80k to spend on whatever vehicle i wanted, i'd go with something that doesn't look like a fucking prius.

Same reason that boat tail bullets do better. Most of your losses are at the back, not the front. |

Quoted: I own 2 Model S's, and have seen the X in person. The X looks MUCH better in person than it does in pictures, but I still prefer the look of the S. My wife is already plotting to trade in her S for an X however. . How many miles have you cumulative on the S ? What kind of weekly mileage do you put on ? How badly does HEATER and Defrost operation impact available range ? Do you charge with grid power, or Solar power mostly ? Thank you for any practical information. |

No significant issues have popped up with either. Both of my cars are the now retired 60 kWh version. My daily commute is 60 miles round trip, and my wife's commute is 55 miles round trip. On the weekends, we often will do 100+ mile trips. The most I have put on one in a single day is 640 miles (riding the supercharger network) On a hot day, the AC might reduce your total range by 5-10 miles. On a cold day, the heater will also reduce your range by 5-10 miles. It's only on the really cold days (less than 10 degress) that you start loosing a bit more range, but even then its really not to bad, maybe 15-20 miles max. Unless you are doing serious road tripping, this loss will not effect your availability to do your daily driving, and even if you are road tripping, in most area's, the super chargers are spaced so that temperature losses would not be a factor. I charge off of grid power. I simply installed 2x 14-50 240v outlets in my garage, and use those to charge. In Cincinnati, power is cheap enough that solar has way to long of a ROE for my tastes. I could care less about the environmental benefits of electric cars or solar, I just hate buying gas, love the tech in the tesla's, and love the electric vehicle driving experience. |

The Model S is dead sexy. This...I don't know about this. Yeah, this looks like a design intern took a Model S, then stretched it into an SUVish shape with MS Paint. I'm not a fan. I love the Model S and I am definitely looking forward to their cheap car (Model 3 or E, I forget). |

A challenger appears.
http://www.cnbc.com/2015/08/20/audi-set-to-rival-teslas-model-x-with-electric-suv.html I'm glad to see more automakers start to come out with total-electric offerings. Now if only someone would come out with a small-midsize electric pickup truck. Posted Via AR15.Com Mobile |

I don't think many here understand how nice it is to (almost - in my case) never have to go to a gas station... to leave your own garage every day with a "full tank". |

Most engineering minded folks might saw it's for a towed, range extending, battery trailer. Quoted:
Quoted:
What is the range towing? 10 feet? 30? I have not heard any rumor about anything like that. It's technically feasible, of course. I'd think doing what some owners of older Rav 4 EVs did - put a generator on a trailer so you can use it when you travel great distances. Tesla doesn't seem to want to do anything like that due to the Supercharger network. The vehicle could tow light loads (think something like a jet ski) and probably not suffer too badly on range. Consider you're starting with about 240 miles of range. In the last 5 years, I can only think of 4 times I had to drive more than 100 miles in a day, and they were all elective (vacations). 240 miles would be plenty of range for the majority of people who commute. Plug in and charge up at home so you always leave with a 'full tank'. |

In video, it looks really nice! And huge!
