| I remember seeing a few threads about cheap radios being sold online. I think their name started with a B. Is there a final review on them. I think they were under 50 bucks. |

Baofeng are by far the best bang for the buck. For a few bucks more you can get the 7 watt model.

The difference between the 5 and 8 watt with the antenna mounted on the radio is jack and squat 99.9% of the time. |

Quality control is hit and miss. You WILL want a different antenna. My stock one gets warm when TX for extended time, to the point I speculate it is a 5W 50ohm resistor. You WILL want a programing cable and software. http://www.amazon.com/Baofeng-Programming-Cable-BAOFENG-BF-888S/dp/B00CP0I474 and http://chirp.danplanet.com/projects/chirp/wiki/Home are both GTG on this radio. Don't expect huge range on these without a decent antenna. And remember, it is only a HT. Nothing more, nothing less. Like a sidearm, it works with you dont have something nicer/bigger/more powerful. |
|
If you're gonna go, go with the F8-HP. I have three of the uv5-r radios and one of the fh-8p ones. The receive is identical between the two. with the 8 watt unit and a decent 5/8 wave antenna, i can hit more repeaters and hit them clearer than i can with the 5 watt units on the same antenna.
Its not much more money, but can make all the difference sometimes |

The stock antenna is the only downfall to these radios. |

The UV-B5 model is a better radio with better battery life and a better stock antenna out of the box. Again, if this is for genuine amateur radio use, why in GD instead of the ham forum? If it's NOT for amateur radio use, do you know what you're doing so as to not cause interference to others? These radios are NOT pre-programmed with suitable frequencies, and MUST be programmed to something suitable. |

There are several pre made programming files for the Baofeng. I used the one in the link below. And yes, you'll need the cable and the free software. |

A whole lot of INappropriate frequencies in that list. As for the OP, none of the radios discussed in this thread are "ham" radios. They can be used for amateur radio but are neither designed nor approved as amateur transceivers. I suspect that the OP is not actually looking for an amateur radio transceiver in any event. |

Do you have an amateur radio license? What do you intend to use the radios for? Do you know how to find and then program the radio with suitable frequencies? yes I am a tech have in the SUV for emergencies if out of cell range and to talk to people Nope. |
