Serious question. What happens if you, for example got a job in a union plant but are not part of a union. Management (hiring and firing power) is not union but lower level "leadership" is. You refuse to join What happens? Serious question. I have read horror stories of union intimidation, but am wondering if that still happens on an individual level. |

First, I really don't care for unions...however, once a company has to deal with a union the die has been cast and it will usually be better to hold your nose and be in the union.
Being in the union will usually keep you "in the loop" on important info, eliminate loopholes that the union, company and benefit providers can use to potentially exclude you. Most importantly, as a member you have a vote on contracts and representatives. I have worked for my current employer at two different facilities in two different states, one without a union (formerly) and one with a union (currently) and can say I would rather have the union with this specific employer...even if I really don't like the way they do everything. Ultimately I wish I could have a position that would not need to have representation at all, where the company understands that its people are an asset, not a necessary evil, but I really don't think that will happen outside of having my own business. I'm not sure if that will be any help or not, but thats been my observation. Good luck in your situation man, I know its not always easy. |

It Depends!
I don't belong to the Union. I am "Fair Share". I pay (they take!) union dues, but the Union sends me back roughly 1/3 of my dues that they would give to Dems. I can't vote in Union elections or for (against!) the contract. The Union has to represent me...good luck with that if you don't know how the game is played. |
