What percentage of traffic stops yield more than just the violation they were stopped for?
Watching a traffic stop while waiting for cab. Dude is getting removed for something. |

If it's a patrol guy "fishing", 20-30%. Real shitty neighborhoods, closer to 50/50. When I worked patrol, I'd stop 8-12 cars a 12 hours shift and could usually pull a felony out of one. I usually wrote 1 ticket out of those stops, with most being warnings or advisals. |

I hate writing tickets, but could do it all day and night, if I felt like it. As others have said, it's situation dependant. I've stopped a Jimmy John's driver for speeding, was going to give him a warning, and he popped for a unpaid speeding ticket warrant. I let him call his manager so the customer could get their sandwich.
Most of my "routine" stops have been some of my biggest cases. |
| In bad neighborhoods almost any stop could result in an arrest because no one has a valid license, the tags are probably bogus, dude has warrants, dope, guns, drunk, etc. In nice neighborhoods, just the opposite. If you ride a hot area and want to stay available for calls of a serious nature you either don't stop a lot of people or let a lot of people go on petty stuff like revoked license. Plus your partners don't appreciate if you are tied up on a self generated misdemeanor when shooting calls are going out. |

Drive a little safer...OK?" In the 90's it was kilos, guns, push-in crews, etc. After 04, it was strictly gangs... We probably stopped and let go tens of thousands of people for traffic bullshit. I think I wrote less than 100 moving violations, (never went to court / ECAB) and took a ton of shit for it. There was absolutely NO fucking point screwing regular folks out of $, when scumbaggery was so prevalent. |

| If its a traffic guy, very low probability of getting anything more than a suspension, unlicensed or DUI. Most of those guys dont even run for warrants and check for status only on licenses. (Traffic cops suck) patrol guys are usually fishing for dirtbags using any vehicle code as probable cause to stop and find out what they are up to. Those stops usually result in dope, guns, gangbangers, stolen property, warrants etc... about 20-30% of the time with a good officer who knows what hes looking for, depending on the area worked could be higher or lower. When I worked gang neighborhoods, it was closer to 75% that I was pulling someone out of the car for some more serious violation. |

When someone in the Heights handed you a legit license....You had to fight the urge to hand them all your money, strip your uniform off and leave it in the street....and just go home....

My favorites were the livery drivers with their Ivory Coast driver's licenses.

In a small town(700+) I would get quite a few revoked, suspended, cancelled, cancelled IPS, Expired, etc.
The most I got on one stop was for not stopping at a stop sign. I had him for...... - Stop sign - Underage drinking and driving - Minor consumption - Open bottle - possession of alcohol - Possession of tobacco Driver was 16 years old. |

Totally depends on where you work, what shift you work and if you are working strictly traffic or if traffic stops are the means that justify an ends. Like where I work, I could go out right now and with in 5 stops I could have a decent dope arrest and prob get warrants on 2 other stops. Each stop would be totally legit ie: valid legal reasons for stop. J- |

Dude was driving down the road drunk on a busted tire with the rim sparking all over the place 25 miles from home. He's apparently going away for awhile. Criminals are generally stupid people. |

We let alot of smaller arrestable offenses go completely or cite and release because we just dont have the time or man power to make a custodial arrest for it all. |
