A coworker's cousin has found this for sale and my coworker is wanting to pick it up.

From what I can tell, this looks like an 1873 trap door.  But it is marked 1871 with ser.no. 50XXX

What rifle do we have here?

I just bought one last week, I don't know a lot but that looks like a carbine which goes for a lot more than the rifle.  Google Trap Door and look at the info on the site.

This.  I have a trapdoor rifle and that is either a rifle that has been cut down or a carbine.  They did have factory carbine models back then.  IIRC they were for cavalry.  The rifle models with have almost a full length stock and are super long.  Like Mosin Nagant long.  1870's ish is a little more rare.  The most common ones were made in the 1880s and marked as such.

Not a carbine but it is a cut down rifle. Should not be marked 1871 unless it is a 50-70 and not a 45-70. it does not look like a 50-70 to me. Pictures of lock and breechblock would help. Not worth much as it is. 2-3 hundred.

Just noticed no rear sight and a bead in the front. Is the barrel smooth or rifled. It may have been converted to a shotgun.

I have a full rifle and carbine originals.  I can't remember the exact models as there are stuck back in the safe at my parents house.  Never got around to moving them to mine.  The carbine is what was researched at the time as Pre-Custer.  I also have the bayonet for the full rifle.

This one gave me pause though.  The carbines barreled around 22 inches and this looks longer.  The carbines also have a blade front sight rather than a pin.

I am concerned that this was sporterized at some point.

But on a trapdoor sight, this really looks like a 1873.  There was no description if the 1873's were missing the saddle ring though like this one is.  Being marked as 1871 has me confused.

SN is 50211
1871 model on the gun.

This is the best I have.

Stock looks like if it was chopped, it was done a long time ago.

Serial number throws it off, so it could be something like a Bannerman conversion.

What I'm leaning towards.

That doesn't even look like cut-down rifle to me. Looks like a rifle that's simply been placed into a carbine stock.

Were some of those made with barrel band still on it?
Seems plausible but the band and a 1871 marking still throws me.

Have not done that.  It is being purchased early next week.  Once I get a chance to get better pics, I will post them.

Does it say Model 1871 or just 1871?

Where on the barrel are the screw holes for the rear sight?

Original or replica?  Looks like its in really good shape to be an original.
