MONTREAL (AP) -- Fans booed during the playing of the U.S. national anthem before the New York Islanders' 6-3 victory over the Montreal Canadiens on Thursday night. The sellout crowd of 21,273 at Bell Centre was asked to "show your support and respect for two great nations" before the singing of the American and Canadian national anthems. But a significant portion of the crowd booed throughout Star-Spangled Banner in an apparent display of their displeasure with the U.S.-led war against Iraq. More than 200,000 people turned out for an anti-war demonstration in Montreal last Saturday. "I'm sure there are a lot of people against the war, but some things people can't control," said New York's Alexei Yashin, who is from Russia. "They were probably showing what they feel about it." Teammate Mark Parrish, a native of Bloomington, Minn., was upset hearing the boos. "I came to the game pretty pumped up, but once I heard that it really got me going," Parrish said. "So I guess I can thank them a little bit for getting me more pumped up." I was at a game in Vancouver, the Canucks hosting the LA Kings, prior to 9/11/01 and those assholes did the same thing then. I left Canada in '81, and became a US citizen in '92....I think I have the right to say FUCK EM. |

Quoted: Remember that those assholes are the French Canadians. Yes but, there are more than enough English assholes in western Canada. Cant speak for the attitude among folks in central provinces. Most recently, a group of us went to a hockey game in Vancouver just last week. We bought the tickets at the beginning of the season and really wanted to see the Blues kick some Canuck ass so we stuck with the plan to go to the game instead of selling the tickets. At the border crossing at Blaine (Peace Arch) we were met with total disdain and contempt by the Canadian customs. We all had proper ID yet they still ordered us to pull to the side and report to immigrations inside. Once in there we were delayed another half hour. We were the only people in there, with 6 or 7 Canadian officials standing around jackin their jaws, just gawking at us till one decided to recheck our credentials and gratiously allow us entry. Once in Vancouver we fired up converstaions with random Canadians to guage their attitudes toward the impending war. Man, what a group of ill informed people. |
