My wife wants to buy one for me, but I don't know which I should get. I currently have a PS3, so the backwards compatibility of the Xbox is a non-issue. Get both is not an option at this time. Also, we have a Roku. With all the apps that come on these gaming systems, is there any reason to keep the Roku? |

Whatever your friends have. pretty much. I've always been a playstation guy, I hate the xbox controller. that said, i logged millions of hours playing Halo with my buddies in college and loved it.. I actually just bought a PS4 over the weekend b/c my buddy has one and we play Battlefield online, pretty fun. |
|
I'll go with the PS4 when I get one. Friend of mine has both. Five of us were going to do some battling on Halo with the xbox, and when we tried some new maps that we hadn't done before (ultimate edition or something like that) we couldn't play them. Suddenly we couldn't play any maps. The game wouldn't work until it downloaded some massive update which would take several hours on his crappy connection. So on to the PS4 we went. |
| If you don't mind having a camera in your living room watching you all the time, get an Xbox One. I refuse that kind of spy device, so I won't be getting one. PS4 has a camera but it's optional and extra. From what I gather PS4 and Xbox One are nearly the same power, with a slight edge to PS4 but not really significant. |

Optional and extra just like the Xbox One camera? |

I stopped reading anything about Xbox One just before this story came out: http://www.msnbc.com/hardball/microsoft-backtracks-xbox-one-camera-amid |

I always recommend people go by the following:
1. What do your friends have? 2. Which console's exclusives appeal to you more? If neither of those tips you one way or the other, I'd say PS4. While the 2 consoles are fairly close to one another in terms of power and graphics capability, they aren't close at all in terms of sales. The PS4 has nearly double the number of consoles sold as the X1 (~14 million X1s, vs ~24 million PS4s). The reason that's important in the long run is that the most popular console tends to 1) become the lead development unit, meaning that games will generally look and run better on it, and 2) will be more likely to snag more and bigger exclusives from second and third parties. ETA: though it should always be remembered that a lot can happen over the course of a generation, and the X1 could catch up, though I don't think it's very likely. |

I was kinda leaning towards the PS4 because of the massive differences in popularity. But I'm not a hardcore gamer, so a slightly decreased selection of games wouldn't affect me as much as it does others. Which one has the better apps? |

As long as they stay brand loyal i suppose |

OP, I'm a gamer at times but wasn't one to play online against other people because I know I don't have skills and would die quickly. It would get boring quickly dying again and again when I tried to play online.
I settled for playing my Xbox360 against my son and we'd play the Halo series, Gears of War, Madden NFL, Forza, Project Gotham Racing... and a few others. And I was fine not playing online. I picked up an Xbox One for my son and got Titanfall because I wanted to play it but it was online only. Same thing with Destiny. I played those games online quite a bit and found that I enjoy it. Try online. You might like it. And Xbox Live Gold (which you get with the purchase of an Xbox One) gives away free games 2 times per month... for Xbox 360 AND Xbox One... and there's also the Xbox Arcade where you can download demo games and try them out before you buy them to find out if you like them or not. |

PS4 has God of War, Uncharted, and now The Last of Us. But this generation will hopefully lead to the rise of new IPs for each console as well, so who knows what the answer to that question will be in 5 years. |

As long as they stay brand loyal i suppose I think the backwards compatibility move will help with that. Also, this fall will be highly interesting because the PS4 has a weak (i.e. non-existant) exclusive lineup this fall, while MS has Halo and Tomb Raider (timed exclusive, but still). So Microsoft has a good cahnce of making some ground up, if they play their cards right. As someone who actually plays all the games I can on PC rather than console (have a Playstation for Uncharted, basically), it's quite interesting. I don't have a dog in either corner, so I can just sit and watch. |

Not always, though that's usually the case. Some games are "always online" but still have a single player mode - you just have to have an internet connection to play it. Personally, I almost never play online anymore. I have more fun in single player games like The Witcher 3 and Fallout. but YMMV. Both xbox gold and PS+ (which is playstation's version of the online service) are quite good and both give you free games. Playstation's games are generally better, but you lose access to them when you stop paying for the service (both consoles are like $50 a year). Xbox gold games are usually older and not as good, but you keep access to them forever. It's kind of a toss up. PS+ used to be the clear winner no contest, but the free gold games have been getting a lot better as of late. |

Though looking at other things, like which controller you prefer, the multimedia options (xbox is better, but I don't do that kind of stuff no it doesn't factor in for me), user interface (PS4 is currently better, though the X1 is supposed to be getting an update), etc. |

And it will get an upgrade later this year to a windows 10 based OS which can only help increase the application selection even more. Not to mention the various discounts/promotions that are available for xbox consoles currently making them a better value compared to the PS4. |
