Help me design homemade armor that is cheap and practical. Every few years, the leftist control freaks float the idea of an armor ban but if we can demonstrate that someone can build something just as effective, if a bit less comfortable with $20 of supplies from Home Depot, it takes a lot of the wind out of their sails. I'd like to hear your ideas on what we can do to make a lighter, cheaper, better plate.

Here is Royal Nonesuch's contribution to the project:

This is the thread that gave me the idea in the first place.

Linothorax is just layers of tough linen fabric and glue.  Add xtra layers and fab in a pocket for a trauma plate, and yer off to the redneck races.

I'm on my phone and too lazy to find it, but there was a very long thread dedicated to this a year or so ago.

I think high end, commercial grade tiles worked. In the same thread, or maybe a spinoff, arfcom pioneered the spall protection you now see on all steel armor.

You can buy chainsaw chaps at home improvement stores - I bet you can make something that will stop many handgun rounds with two pairs folded correctly but that would run more like $120 or so.

That's a good idea for a local source for kevlar/aramid. You could probably make four usable plates from a set of the chaps if you just used a section to back a floor tile or two.

I wonder what the difference is between the HDPE armor plates and "regular" stuff.

What about abrasive blasting media? Suspend it in a bed liner or epoxy sandwiched between polycarb or hdpe or ???

Garnet or silicon carbide media? The garnet sand is dirt cheap at $25/50lbs. I'd consult with the big brains on here before committing to the idea/materials.

Yeah, that's pretty expensive. It would have to be cheaper for it to be worth it. If there were some affordable ceramic beads about the size of #8 shot or so, it might work to mix them with fiberglass resin and sandwich that between two porcelain floor tiles. Maybe back with an HDPE cutting board.

Ceramic polishing media comes in all different sizes and is fairly tough but not too cheap.

I have messed around with uhmwhdpe in the past, by itself it wont stop much, but if you laminate a few sheets of it together mixed with some sort of proper aramids I bet it can be done pretty cheap and light.
