I'm sure I'm going to catch hell for this from all angles but are any of you ZERT members and have you taken anything beneficial away from being a member? I was warned in conversation with a friend that it would be a bunch of fanboy bullshit with neckbeards running around "training courses" trying to prepare for a zombie apocalypse.

The zombie deal was never my thing. Just looking for like minded survival and preparedness guys to train with. Are there other groups besides "militias" filled with bubbas that call themselves by goofy call signs and outrageous ranks?

I've set the stage. Flame away

If you want to train, more power to you, but couching it in some kind of middle-school "club" is super lame

I'm a member. Here's my experience.

ZERT is a platform to reach out to local members who may have knowledge or resources you may not have. I have found people willing to host shoots on their private land, offer informal instruction on shooting fundamentals, drills, medical, physical security, fieldcraft, etc... This works out well for me because I don't have private land and am restricted to shooting at public ranges (no shoot and move, target transitions, primary/secondary transitions, drawing from the holster, etc..)

I think of it as a more effective HTF, where we actually get together and do stuff. ZERT as an organization is just a money machine. The benefits of membership take place at the local level.

There can be over zealous members, just like any group— but our group has yet to mention anything about a zombie apocalypse. "Zombie" is a figurative term though. It basically is synonymous with FSA types during a crisis. Their theme may be ridiculous, but I think the premise is sound.

That's all I got. Flame on.

^ This.

I am a member as well, going on my second year. I have linked up with some pretty cool people through ZERT that I would not have found otherwise, people with some neat backgrounds and experience.

They have a lot of pipehitters in their cadre. If you can get enough people together to sign up and request training in your area, it's a lot cheaper than most other places. There is a lot of knowledge sharing that goes on in the group. It's been worth it for me in my opinion.

It really is what you make of it.

Is that the group where people spray paint conversion vans flat black and do drills with UTG and uncle mikes gear?

They look like they're having fun and encouraging training and self-sufficency. Chunks of it look silly, but I think that's better than the folk who are terrified of looking silly.

A lot of folk here take themselves way too seriously. I can admit that I train hard and am armed to the teeth 'cause I'm a Walter Mitty at heart.
