So I have two male cats, both fixed. One is about 12 the other about 3. My girlfriends cat is female and around 11. Tomorrow she is moving her cat in with me due to a number of reasons but mainly in anticipation of us moving in together in a few months. My cats have never shown aggression to any other cat. Both mine and hers have all lived with other cats. So what are we in for? We read all the stuff online. I'm expecting her female to establish dominance as she's a bit more "feisty" and mine are so easygoing. I've read that cats mainly identify by smell. We've been dating 7 months so I'm sure they've all had ample time to smell each other on my and hers clothes. Does that sound right? |

I've read to keep them separated in different rooms for a couple days for them to get used to the smells then let them check each other out supervised. They'll likely scrap or be pissy at each other for a while until they get used to each other. So in your opinion, do you think it'll be any easier if they've been smelling each other for the past 7 months? |

I guess they might be less agitated as the smell is familiar, but they'll still be agitated as it's an incursion into your cats home turf. As long as they have their own "places" and they're not crammed into too small an area it shouldn't be bad. Having a separate litter box for your girlfriends kitty in a different spot may be a good idea for a while though. |

Keep the guys and girl secured in separate rooms for awhile but give her access to common areas while the guys are in lockdown,
Allow them to investigate each other from underneath a closed door or behind glass like a patio door. Give the new arrangement a week or so or the guys will attack her for invading their space. |

In our case, there were never any issues between the female cat we brought in as a stray and the two males we already had.
OTH, after a brief and peaceful intro between the two fixed males a few years earlier, we had nothing but trouble between them. There's a saying, "A cat can ignore anything but another cat". Good luck. |

They had a long time to realize they were in the house together. No major problems. |
|
Just throw them together and ignore them. They'll work it out. I'm not a big fan of tip-toeing around such introductions. I remember when I brought my rescue cat home for the first time. We had two dogs.. The cat waltzed in, swatted the first dog that came too close ("Don't fuck with me"), and made himself comfortable. |

Cats are assholes.
We got a dog in January and our cat still whines and occasionally bats at him. Could be because he's a dog, I don't know but they'll certainly need a little time. Since I contributed nothing to the original question, I'll just say this is a tag for the carnage. Or a pic of the cats with your woman's toes in the picture. |
