What ticks me off is back in the 80's I started buying tools and bought their brand for their lifetime warranty.  At the time their tools were made by a handful of US companies and were pretty decent for that era.  If I break my 80's socket made by a US company or simply wear it out,  I can get a garbage Chinese socket that might last 10 hard uses instead of 30 years.  But you can get another pos socket to replace the other POS socket you just broke.  False economy and aggravating.  That's not much better than the no name tools you can buy at a dollar store or Central Tractor.   ETA- I forgot how bad their socket sizing has gotten, mic some of the Chinese sockets or wrenches and see how close they get to the right size.  You'll see why they tend to round off nuts now.   Lately I've been buying Kobalt.

If they ever wanted to resuscitate the brand they'd have to go back to US quality.   They've done a shit ton of damage to the brand.  Could they pull it around?  I doubt it.

I used to be a member of the Craftsman Club 20 years ago and you'd get coupons and special offers.  I lost touch moving several times and not keeping my address up to date.  Watching garage journal I see they still have special offers for Craftsman Club members but the results vary.  I renewed my address with the Craftsman Club but you can't really get back into the program.  No emails, no fliers.  I was told you have to check online daily for deals.  i did that for a little bit but could never access the actual CC deal, it'd always go up in price to regular price at check out.  That's just thrilling for the customer.  When I did find a really nice one day sale you couldn't ever take advantage of it as they'd be out of stock or it'd be an in store only pick up deal and no store within 250 miles had any product.  Useless useless useless.

I was a Craftsman Club member for a while.  Used to get Sears tools catalogs mailed to me.  Loved reading them for the tool porn.

Made in China using American spec given by an American company, QC accepted by an American company and sold to Americans nationwide. We only have ourselves to blame but we blame others.

Specs isn't just the dies. Specs also call out the various requirements of the steel.
China can build anything with quality, it just takes a ton of oversight that most corporations won't invest in, hence you end up with Chinese shit.

Mind explaining how the North American Free Trade Agreement resulted in manufacturing moving to China?  GATT's been around in various forms since 1948, not sure how you can blame Sears' recent problems on that.

You have NAFTA and Gatt to thank for that.

I will say that I bought a Craftsman gas powered weed eater in '04. I've ran the hell out of that thing and it's never hiccupped once.

I just make sure to run the tank dry on the last use in the fall.

But I still believe they won't exist as a brick and mortar presence within a couple of years. Online presence? Probably, at least as a brand name.

I have $300 in Sears gift card just sitting around because I have no use for them.

I plan to drive up through Maine in the next few months and I hear they still have K-Marts, so I'm going to use them there I guess.

Sears used to be one of the first places I'd think of when I needed something.. since they sell all kinds of stuff.

I really can't even remember the last time I went to Sears.. or even thought about it.  It's a store that is literally dead to me.

Stores like Target, Walmart, Sears, K Mart , etc are surviving on selling junk to us because we buy junk from them.

I go to Sears whenever I go to the mall.  It's a great place to park because no one is there.  So, I go inside Sears every time I go to the mall but I just use it as an entryway.

Guess I'll break the mold, bought a push mower there a couple weeks ago, price was right.  Sure it's not the same as the old craftsmen, but only two or three companies make all of the push mowers anymore, so buy it where it's cheapest.  I don't go there on a regular basis though.

My first job was at Sears.  That place was a magnet for retail theft....hell one of the guys who worked with me would make up fake returns and go take random shit off the shelves, scan it,and pocket the cash....fucked up.  I walked out one day, wrote "I quit" on the receipt roll on the register, and scrolled it up.  Couldn't stand dealing with the general public shopper types...especially during the holidays.

That same local sears for the past 2 yrs has had the AC system broken in the summer....fight between them and the mall...both are shit holes.  Fucking miserable in there.

Yeah, there's one in the town I live in and I've seen a few around Houston.

Only thing I've used the one in town for is pickup.  I ordered a dishwasher from Sears.com and they delivered it to the Hometown store which is 5 miles away instead of having to drive into Houston to pick it up.

My last meaningful Sears experience:

Last year, Sears had a very good sale price for a set of wrenches on their website. Next to the "order" option was an option to "check local stores." The website indicated that my local Sears Hardware Store had the set in stock. Debit card in hand, I set off to the store to grab my wrenches. When the store manager rang-up the purchase, the price was significantly higher. I showed the manager the product listing on my phone. He said they don't honor online prices... as they are NOT a Sears store, but a franchise. I mentioned the Sears shirt and nametag he was wearing... as well as the "Welcome to Sears" banner hanging overhead. He repeated his assertation. I thanked him for his time, handed back the wrenches, and walked outside.

When I got to the parking lot, I pulled-out my phone. Sitting behind the wheel; I purchased the wrenches online at the reduced price. I selected the same store as my "local pick-up" option. Before I submit the order, I see the "bring my order to my car" option. A short time later; the same manager -- looking somewhat defeated -- walks out, reaches through the passenger's window, and sets my wrenches on the seat.

Why are you looking at the tools?  Most of them are made in China.

Moving the hand tools to China really was one of the big failures on their part, but they probably didn't really have a choice at that point... EPA is making it a lot harder to make those here.

I feel like I hit the jackpot.

I have a group 31 DieHard AGM marine battery as a secondary in my boat, runs the stereo system, etc.

It started to fail on me last week.

I pulled it, and it said on the front, "3 year replacement." There was a manufacture date of 4/12 on it. I called my local Sears store, and they looked up my purchase by phone number. I had bought it in July 2012! They ended up replacing it 35 months into a 36 month warranty.

Perfect timing, and I was glad to get it. I feel that the replacement battery will likely outlast the chain.

**Side note: to give you an idea how little product is moved locally, the newest 31g AGM battery they had available was manufactured in 2013. It tested well, so I took it. Better than the junk one I took in.

Around here the Sears stores don't stock them, Kmart does though
My brother went into a Sears in SW WA and was looking for a battery. Auto manager told him he doesn't even bother ordering them anymore, takes months to get them in. I've got a feeling their suppliers are tired of not getting paid.

I went in to Sears last year to get a new motorcycle battery for my scooter.  When the guy rang the new one up it wouldn't appear on his system. Turns out it was so old that the system no longer showed it.

He gave it to me for free with no warranty.

It worked just fine

Meh... They used to be the go to for my dad and then me because of their CS for everything(washer, dryer, tools etc)

Quality on their tools has slid a little but they still carry their warranty and I can buy them at Ace right up the street. Split a socket not long ago and they replaced it without any trouble.

I can give the good and bad in one experience.

I wanted to build a keezer and wanted to physically see the freezer I would be modify before I purchased it.  Most places either did not stock freezers (special order, no postage), but that still left me w/o the option to see it before taking ownership.  Sears said they had one in stock 20 minutes away - so I took an hour lunch to go buy it (if it fit).  It fit, but they would not sell it to me (then they would not have any inventory...)

Well I happened to go by a sears hometown store latter that day (they intentionally do not stock "inventory", but arrange for local pickup.  I told them they probably could not help me since they did not have inventory - they said what did I want.  I walked out with the freezer I wanted $25 less than the big box sears store.  They had no problem not having a display model for 3 days.

One store made a sale, one lost a sale...

well the problem is that where you used to get hardened tool steel  that would take and keep an edge (Say for a wood chisel) Now you get  pot metal with sort of an edge but is so soft it barely works, won't take and edge and rolls and never keeps it.

All for the same price of the old tool.

Its like that for whatever you can think of.

Look at the model of Sears. When it first came out it was pretty damn revolutionary. As other similar models came around Sears main thing was their Craftsman line. After more like minded store came and the quality at sears went down of course sales went down. Hell I can go to Home Depot or Lowes buy a similar product similar warranty for much less.

Last thing I bought from sears was a grill (Kenmore) and its awesome wanted a Weber but couldn't find one for my price range that I wanted

I hope they stay in business but I wonder how they will.

Yesterday I attempted to buy two mower air filters, one mower oil filter, and two blades.  All I had were the mower's serial numbers.  The person working there said their systems were down and they could not look up the part numbers.  I guess I will attempt to buy the stuff from Ace or Lowes.

I got a stapler back in the 80's it finally broke about 2 or 3 years ago. I went in replace it because it had a lifetime warranty. The KID behind the counter said to me "You have the receipt?" I said "Umm no this was bought back in the 80's, you want me to save the receipt for all my tools?" He said "Something that old is out of warranty" Then I schooled him on what lifetime warranty means and he just looked puzzled.

Enter the manager... He knows what is going on ... and THEN HE SCHOOLED ME!

"We no longer have a lifetime warranty so you can go to the shelf, pick up the stapler that you want BUT it has a one year warranty. After that, you cannot replace it. AND you have to hold on to your receipt"

It was at that moment, I knew I would NEVER buy another Craftsman tool again. You promise lifetime warranty and then you change it?

They didn't change anything. They did honor the lifetime warranty on the stapler that had a lifetime warranty...yours.  The stapler they replaced it with does not have a lifetime warranty.

I worked at one, in the auto center, when I was a teenager in high school and that place was hoppin'.  We stayed busy out in the shop, and the store parking lot was slam full.  They paid us like an incentive bonus if we went over "x" hours/dollars in the shop, they had lunches upstairs in the store at least once a month or so, the employee discount was alright for buying tools and clothes and stuff, it was a good gig back then.

Now, I'm glad I got the hell out of there when I did.
