I recently bought a Grizzly G0619 mini mill.   It was a few years old but still in the shipping crate and shows no sign of use at all, so I don't believe its been tinkered with.

The spec sticker on the machine, and the manual, and the website, says it uses a R8 collet.  It came with the drill chuck installed, which I carefully removed and tried to replace with a clearly marked Grizzly R8 collet from a 12 piece set.   It won't fit.  At all. None of them fit. I did a direct comparison of the holders and they are the same in diameter and length, but the key-way size is different.  The key-way size on the drill chuck holder that fits measures .215" and the key-way on the Grizzly R8 collet set measures .165".

Can anyone confirm what size the key-way actually is on another R8 collet?   Is there something else I'm supposed to change when switching from the drill chuck holder to a collet?   I can't figure out if the problem lies inside the mill or is with the collet set. It seems like it should be super easy.   I can put the drill chuck holder in and out, over and over no problem, so I know WHAT to do, just the collets won't fit.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

Keyway should be 5/32" wide and 3/32" deep.

Grizly did not switch to R8 collets until later in the production run.  The earlier machined used 3 morse taper, iirc.  Maybe you have one of those?

You could always remove the key, it won't be an issue as long as you don't bugger up the threads in your collets or on the drawbar.

Perhaps?  That would mean they put the wrong information on the sticker on the mill, but stranger things have happened.

Is it just pressed in place?

I'm at work, it's at home.   I might attempt this later on today.

What I can't figure out is why the key-way for the drill chuck holder is cut so wide?

Maybe they cut it on a mini mill.

Did you unscrew the drawbar and remove the chuck holder?
I have a full size Grizzly mill and have nothing but good to say about it.
Certainly no problems using a collet holder and collets

If I could have swung a Bridgport, I would have.

I removed the drawbar but nothing else.   I was trying to figure out where the problem was first.

I picked up my Supermax Bridgeport clone for $1500 used.  It was nasty, but it had a fresh motor on it.
